UNMISS has a significant presence in South Sudan, with a ceiling of 17,000 troops and over 2,100 police personnel. Job Overview:
The Gender Affairs Officer position is critical within the Gender Affairs Unit of UNMISS, focusing on the integration of gender perspectives into peacekeeping operations. The role involves coordinating gender training for military and civilian personnel, engaging with NGOs and community partners, and participating in the Gender Working Group. The officers will also assist in policy advisory roles, ensuring that gender mainstreaming is effectively implemented across UNMISS operations. This position requires a proactive approach to liaising with various units within the mission and contributing to the overall strategic vision of UNMISS in promoting gender equality and women's empowerment in South Sudan.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Gender Affairs Officer will undertake a variety of tasks, including: coordinating and delivering gender training courses; liaising with NGOs and community organizations for capacity building; participating in Gender Working Group meetings; collaborating with other UNMISS units on gender-related issues; assisting in policy advisory roles regarding gender mainstreaming; planning and conducting research and assessments; coordinating with the Public Information Office on gender-related materials; ensuring the needs of female ex-combatants are addressed; tracking developments in gender roles; preparing reports for senior officials; and performing other related duties as required. Additionally, the officer is expected to engage in volunteerism activities, promote local volunteerism, and contribute to UNV publications.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess strong communication skills, effective planning and organizational abilities, and a high level of professionalism. They should demonstrate a commitment to gender equality and have experience in gender-related work, particularly in conflict or post-conflict settings. The ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups and stakeholders is essential, as is a willingness to adapt to challenging living conditions.

Educational Background:
A relevant degree in social sciences, gender studies, international relations, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees are preferred and may enhance the candidate's suitability for the role. Training or certifications in gender mainstreaming or peacekeeping will be considered an asset.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 2-3 years of professional experience in gender affairs, gender mainstreaming, or related fields, preferably within a UN or international organization context. Experience working in conflict or post-conflict environments is highly desirable, as is familiarity with the UN system and its operations.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Knowledge of additional languages spoken in South Sudan, such as Arabic or local dialects, is considered an advantage and may enhance communication with local communities.
