Job Overview: The position of Expert in the field of hazardous waste management involves supporting the implementation of projects aimed at reducing risks associated with improperly managed chemical waste. The role is integral to the GIZ International Services division, which provides expertise in economic and result-oriented services globally. The expert will work under the direction of the Project Team Leader, focusing on various work packages related to chemical issues. The overarching goal is to enhance governance and cooperation on CBRN risk prevention, detection, and mitigation, particularly in the Eastern and Central African region. The expert will contribute to building capacity for managing chemical waste and promoting best practices in accordance with international standards.
Duties and Responsibilities: The main responsibilities include implementing project tasks related to hazardous waste management, supporting the Project Team Leader, and ensuring compliance with regulations and standards. The expert will be involved in training personnel on good management practices for chemical waste, developing guides, and facilitating communication among multidisciplinary teams. Additionally, the expert will be responsible for transferring international best practices and ensuring that all activities align with the project's objectives of reducing risks associated with chemical waste management.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a university-level education in environmental sciences and/or chemistry, with a preference for those who have combined training in both fields. Fluency in English is mandatory, while proficiency in French is also necessary. Strong teaching skills, effective communication, and negotiation abilities are essential for this role. The expert should demonstrate a commitment to fostering a multidisciplinary culture in hazardous waste management.
Educational Background: A university degree in environmental sciences, chemistry, or a related field is required. Additional qualifications or certifications in hazardous waste management or related disciplines would be advantageous.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 10 years of general professional experience, with a minimum of 5 years specifically in hazardous waste management. Experience in chemical waste management, particularly in international organizations, is highly desirable. The expert should have a thorough understanding of procedures for sorting, collecting, storing, treating, and disposing of hazardous chemical waste, as well as experience in developing and implementing chemical hazardous waste management systems.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, and proficiency in French is necessary for both written and spoken communication. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset but is not required.
Additional Notes: This position can be full-time or part-time, with a willingness to undertake frequent business trips required. The operational base for the project will be the Contractor's office, with activities taking place in partner countries or the EU. The intended start date for the position is June 2025, with a contract duration of 48 months.
