Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research institution established to probe the fundamental structure of the universe. It employs physicists and engineers who utilize the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter. CERN has been at the forefront of particle physics research since its inception, contributing significantly to our understanding of the universe. The organization values diversity and has integrated it into its mission since its foundation, making it a core principle of its operations.

Job Overview:
The Technical Student Programme at CERN offers students the unique opportunity to gain practical training in various domains related to Applied Physics. This program is designed for students who are required or encouraged by their university or institute to acquire work experience through an internship. Participants will work at the cutting edge of technology and will have the chance to broaden their knowledge in diverse fields such as particle detector physics, data processing, radiation studies, beam instrumentation, optics, lasers, cryogenics, vacuum, and thermodynamics. This internship is not just a work experience; it is an impressive addition to a student's CV and a chance to engage with some of the most advanced scientific research in the world. However, it is important to note that students specializing in theoretical or experimental particle physics are not eligible for this program.

Duties and Responsibilities:
As a participant in the Technical Student Programme, you will be expected to engage in various tasks that contribute to ongoing projects at CERN. This may include working on the design and development of experimental setups, conducting simulations and analyses, assisting in data collection and processing, and collaborating with experienced researchers and engineers. You will also have the opportunity to participate in team meetings, contribute to project reports, and present your findings to your peers. The role is designed to provide hands-on experience in a professional research environment, allowing you to apply theoretical knowledge in practical situations.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for the Technical Student Programme, applicants must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State. Additionally, candidates should have completed at least 18 months or 3 semesters of their undergraduate studies by the time of the next student selection round in May 202
  • It is also required that applicants remain registered as full-time students during the internship. A good knowledge of English or French is essential for effective communication within the organization.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be enrolled in a university program related to Applied Physics or a closely related field. The program should be recognized and accredited, and students should have completed a significant portion of their studies, specifically at least 18 months or 3 semesters, to ensure they have the foundational knowledge necessary for the internship.

Experience:
While specific prior experience is not mandatory, candidates should demonstrate a strong academic background in their field of study. Any relevant coursework, projects, or previous internships related to applied physics or engineering will be advantageous and should be highlighted in the application.

Languages:
A good command of English or French is mandatory for this position, as these are the primary languages used at CERN. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset but is not required.

Additional Notes:
The Technical Student Programme offers a contract of association lasting from 4 to 12 months, providing a monthly allowance of 3452 Swiss Francs (net of tax), along with a travel allowance. Depending on personal circumstances, there may be additional supplements for those who are married or have children. Participants will also benefit from CERN's comprehensive Health Insurance scheme, with contributions automatically deducted from the monthly allowance. Additionally, interns will receive 2.5 days of paid leave per month. Applicants are required to submit a CV in English or French in PDF format, and while supplementary documents such as academic transcripts or reference letters are recommended, they are not mandatory. The application deadline is set for March 3rd, 2025, at 23:59 CET.
