Job Overview: The Development Coordination Officer / Economist position is integral to the UN Resident Coordination Office in Guatemala. The role involves providing substantive advice and evidence-based analysis on the status of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly focusing on SDG acceleration, economic transformation, and SDG financing. The officer will work closely with the Resident Coordinator and the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) to advocate for strong partnerships and develop integrated SDG programming cycles. This position requires a deep understanding of sustainable development trends, challenges, and opportunities in Guatemala, as well as the ability to coordinate knowledge management and facilitate collaboration among various stakeholders.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct evidence-based analysis of the SDGs and provide advice to the Resident Coordinator and UNCT on SDG acceleration and economic transformation.
Advocate for partnerships within the UN System and with national counterparts to support economic policy reframing for SDG acceleration.
Coordinate the development of integrated SDG programming cycles, including roadmaps and annual reports.
Plan and direct knowledge generation around SDG acceleration and financing, ensuring a shared understanding among UNCT members.
Research and analyze best practices in sustainable development and provide guidance on policies to achieve the SDGs.
Monitor regional and global economic trends and their implications for SDG acceleration in Guatemala.
Engage with the private sector to identify SDG financing opportunities and strengthen collaboration.
Prepare flagship reports on SDG acceleration and financing, analyzing data to support policy recommendations.
Facilitate communication and collaboration among economists within the UN System to enhance advocacy efforts.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in sustainable development policy, economic research, and analysis. A strong understanding of economics, particularly development economics, is essential. Familiarity with SDG financing and the ability to apply development economics theory to specific country contexts is required. Experience in developing countries and international organizations is desirable, as is experience with inter-agency collaboration in the development sector. Outstanding analytical and writing skills are necessary to convey complex ideas clearly and effectively.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in economics, development studies, public policy, or public finance is required. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of seven years of relevant experience in sustainable development policy and economic analysis. Candidates should have a demonstrated understanding of SDG financing and experience in developing programs aimed at achieving the SDGs. Experience in inter-agency collaboration and working within international organizations is also beneficial.
Languages: Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations. Knowledge of another UN official language is considered an advantage, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate effectively within the UN system.
