Job Overview:
The Shelter Care Assistant will play a crucial role in the daily operations of the accommodation centers for unaccompanied minors. This position involves providing care and support to children residing in the facility, ensuring their safety and well-being. The successful candidate will be responsible for monitoring attendance, maintaining hygiene standards, and assisting with daily routines and activities. The role requires a compassionate individual who can create a supportive environment for children, addressing their physical and emotional needs while facilitating access to essential services. The Shelter Care Assistant will work closely with other staff members to ensure a structured and nurturing atmosphere, contributing to the overall mission of IOM in supporting unaccompanied migrant children.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide daily care and support to unaccompanied minors residing in the shelter.
  • Monitor and maintain attendance records for children in the facility.
  • Ensure the security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security and safety of children during 24-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Manage incidents and emergencies by following established protocols and informing relevant staff.
  • Assist with children's physical hygiene and clothing needs, including distribution of goods and cleanliness.
  • Escort children to medical and social services as necessary.
  • Oversee night-time preparations and maintain a presence during night shifts.
  • Collaborate with children to maintain hygiene and living conditions in accommodation rooms.
  • Distribute basic goods to children and communicate needs to the Shelter Coordinator. 1
  • Ensure food quality and timely meal service. 1
  • Organize daily routines and structured activities for children, supporting educational and recreational initiatives. 1
  • Contribute to creating a supportive and protective environment for children. 1
  • Assist children with laundry services and maintain cleanliness in assigned areas. 1
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Shelter Coordinator or Project Coordinator.

Required Qualifications:
  • University degree in Humanitarian, Social Sciences, Social Work, or a related field from an accredited institution, or a minimum high school degree with one year of relevant work experience.
  • Familiarity with direct assistance to migrants and/or refugees, particularly children.
  • Previous experience in a similar role is preferred.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and cultural sensitivity.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including day/night shifts, holidays, and weekends.
  • Valid driver’s license with at least five years of driving experience is an asset.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a university degree in a relevant field such as Humanitarian Studies, Social Sciences, or Social Work from an accredited academic institution. Alternatively, a minimum high school diploma combined with one year of relevant work experience is acceptable. Accreditation of universities must be verified through the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.

Experience:
The position requires familiarity with direct assistance to migrants and/or refugees, especially children. Candidates should have previous experience in a similar role, demonstrating a positive record of working with diverse populations in a multi-cultural environment. Experience in crisis management and a willingness to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends, is essential. A valid driver's license with a minimum of five years of driving experience is considered an asset.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Greek, both written and oral, is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages, particularly IOM's official languages such as French and Spanish, is considered advantageous. Language proficiency will be evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
