Job Overview:
The position of Mechanical Engineer at UNESCO in Basrah is integral to the Phase III project of Reviving Mosul and Basrah Old Cities. This project aims to empower local stakeholders in urban and cultural revitalization efforts. The Mechanical Engineer will play a crucial role in the technical aspects of the project, focusing on the rehabilitation of mechanical, water, and plumbing systems in historical buildings. The engineer will be responsible for ensuring that the mechanical systems are designed and implemented according to international standards, thereby contributing to the overall goal of job creation and cultural revitalization in the region. The role requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including public and private sector representatives, to enhance their technical skills and engage them in the recovery process of the Old Cities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Mechanical Engineer will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including:
- Documenting existing mechanical, water, and sanitary sewer plumbing works related to UNESCO rehabilitation projects in Basrah.
- Planning and designing mechanical and plumbing systems for rehabilitated buildings and facilities.
- Performing design analyses and calculations for mechanical and plumbing systems.
- Preparing detailed working drawings, cost analyses, and project specifications for various rehabilitation projects.
- Supporting design teams in identifying conflicts between mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) installations and architectural designs.
- Conducting design calculations in line with international guidelines and assisting the Architecture Team in executing designs.
- Reviewing drawings and ensuring compliance with established regulations.
- Supervising field tests of plumbing systems to ensure functionality.
- Performing inspections and signing necessary certificates as per Site Inspection Plans. 1
- Detecting design errors and coordinating with the Site Architect/Engineer for necessary adjustments. 1
- Completing any additional duties assigned by the UNESCO Team Leader or Management.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering as a minimum requirement. An advanced degree, such as a Master’s or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, is considered desirable. Candidates should have at least 5 years of relevant work experience in Mechanical or Plumbing Engineering. A strong understanding of mechanical and plumbing principles, including design principles, materials, and fabrication methods, is essential. Experience in engineering and designing HVAC systems, plumbing systems, and temperature control systems is required. Proficiency in AutoCAD and other relevant software for complex calculations is necessary. Candidates should also demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, the ability to organize work effectively, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. An advanced degree, such as a Master’s or PhD, is highly desirable and would enhance a candidate's qualifications for the role. The educational qualifications should reflect a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles and practices, particularly those relevant to plumbing and HVAC systems.
Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of related work experience in Mechanical or Plumbing Engineering. Candidates should have hands-on experience in the design and implementation of mechanical systems, particularly in the context of rehabilitation projects. Experience in working with international standards and codes related to mechanical and plumbing systems is also essential. The candidate should demonstrate a proven track record of successful project execution and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.
Languages:
Fluency in both spoken and written English and Arabic is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of additional UN languages, such as French, Spanish, Chinese, or Russian, is considered an asset and would be advantageous in a multicultural work environment.
Additional Notes:
This position is offered on a part-time basis, requiring a 50% dedication over a duration of 12 months, with the possibility of extension. The contract is classified as a Non Staff/Third-Party contract.
