Job Overview: The Fishery Officer position is integral to the FAO's mission in the Latin America and Caribbean region, focusing on the sustainable management of fisheries. The officer will provide technical and operational support for the implementation of fisheries-related activities, ensuring compliance with FAO rules and procedures. The role emphasizes the importance of sustainable fisheries management to restore ecosystems and secure equitable livelihoods. The Fishery Officer will work closely with the Senior Fishery and Aquaculture Officer and collaborate with other Fisheries and Aquaculture Officers in the region. The position requires a proactive approach to developing management strategies and promoting innovative solutions to enhance fisheries sustainability. The officer will also be involved in collecting and analyzing data, supporting project implementation, and contributing to the development of training materials and workshops.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Fishery Officer will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
Collecting and analyzing relevant technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional, and technological information to support program projects and services.
Providing technical input for plans and reports, and editing/revising technical/scientific documents.
Participating in the development of improved work methods, tools, and systems.
Updating databases and web pages related to fisheries.
Collaborating in the development of training tools and materials, and organizing workshops and seminars.
Assisting in the planning, development, and implementation of fisheries-related activities that align with the Blue Transformation Programme Priority Area.
Supporting the Technical Secretariat of the Commission on Small-Scale, Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture for Latin America and the Caribbean (COPPESAALC).
Preparing reports on fisheries activities and documenting lessons learned and best practices.
Participating in multidisciplinary teams to address cross-cutting issues related to fisheries. 1
Supporting the delivery of training courses on fisheries management and policy. 1
Performing any other duties as required.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree in fisheries economics, natural resource economics, fisheries management, natural resources management, marine affairs, political science with a specialization in fisheries management and/or governance, or a related field. Additionally, candidates should have at least three years of relevant experience in small-scale fisheries, capacity development, policy, fisheries management, fish trade, and/or project planning and implementation in fisheries-related issues. A working knowledge of English (proficiency - level C) and intermediate knowledge of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is also required.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree in a relevant field such as fisheries economics, natural resource economics, fisheries management, natural resources management, marine affairs, or political science with a specialization in fisheries management and/or governance. This advanced degree is essential to ensure that the candidate has the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge to effectively contribute to the FAO's objectives in fisheries management.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of three years of relevant experience in areas such as small-scale fisheries, capacity development, policy formulation, fisheries management, fish trade, and project planning and implementation related to fisheries issues. Experience in field positions and working in multiple locations or areas is desirable, as it enhances the candidate's ability to understand diverse fisheries contexts and challenges.
Languages: A working knowledge of English (proficiency - level C) is mandatory, along with intermediate knowledge (intermediate proficiency - level B) of another FAO official language, which can be Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish. Additionally, a working knowledge of Spanish (proficiency - level C) is highly desirable, given the regional focus of the position.
