In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In doing so, UN Member States took an historic step in accelerating the Organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment:

The main roles of UN Women are:

Job Overview: The Gender in Humanitarian Action Gender Specialist is responsible for enhancing the integration of gender equality and the meaningful participation of women and girls in the humanitarian response in Sudan. Duties and Responsibilities: The Gender Specialist will engage in a variety of duties, including: 1. Providing technical advice on gender-responsive localization and humanitarian submissions. 2. Promoting the participation of women and women's organizations in humanitarian, peace, and development initiatives. 3. Strengthening the capacity of humanitarian workers on Gender in Humanitarian Action (GiHA). 4. Supporting strategic engagement with Humanitarian Country Teams to enhance gender equality funding. 5. Advocating for local women's organizations' participation in humanitarian planning and decision-making. 6. Conducting trainings for cluster coordinators and members on GiHA. 7. Leading coordination efforts on gender integration in humanitarian responses. 8. Monitoring and reporting on gender-related activities and trends in the humanitarian context. 9. Providing guidance and support to junior staff and participating in field missions to assess gender considerations in humanitarian responses.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's Degree in Gender Studies, international relations, human rights, or related fields. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. The role requires a strong understanding of gender and women's human rights frameworks, excellent communication skills, and the ability to build effective relationships with clients and stakeholders.
Educational Background: A Master's Degree in Gender Studies, international relations, human rights, or a related field is required.
