In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In doing so, UN Member States took an historic step in accelerating the Organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment:

Job Overview: The Gender in Humanitarian Action Gender Specialist will report to the Country Representative and is responsible for enhancing the integration of gender equality and the meaningful participation of women and girls in the Sudan humanitarian response. This role involves providing technical advice on gender-responsive localization, supporting strategic engagement with Humanitarian Country Teams, and ensuring that gender considerations are integrated into humanitarian assessments and responses. The specialist will also be tasked with building the capacity of humanitarian workers on gender in humanitarian action (GiHA) and advocating for the inclusion of gender equality funding in humanitarian financing. The position requires a proactive approach to identifying opportunities for civil society engagement and fostering partnerships with women's organizations and networks to ensure that the needs of crisis-affected women and girls are met effectively.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Gender in Humanitarian Action Gender Specialist include providing technical advice on GiHA and gender-responsive localization, participating in reviewing and assessing gender aspects of humanitarian submissions, and contributing to joint efforts across the UN system to promote women's participation in humanitarian initiatives. The specialist will also support the strategic engagement with Humanitarian Country Teams to strengthen gender equality funding, advocate for local women's organizations' participation in humanitarian planning, and investigate opportunities for civil society engagement. Additionally, the role involves advising on advocacy, capacity development, and knowledge building on gender in humanitarian action, developing knowledge products, conducting context updates, and ensuring gender is mainstreamed in cluster assessments. The specialist will lead coordination efforts on GiHA, provide technical guidance to enhance gender integration in humanitarian response, and serve as the primary focal point on gender equality and women's empowerment in humanitarian response.
Required Qualifications: The position requires a Master's Degree in Gender Studies, international relations, human rights, or related fields. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. The candidate must possess sound knowledge of gender and women's human rights' national and international frameworks and policies, strong dialogue and communication skills, and excellent organization and planning skills. The ability to meet deadlines, respond positively to feedback, and manage multiple tasks by establishing priorities is essential.
Educational Background: Candidates must hold a Master's Degree in Gender Studies, international relations, human rights, or related fields. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree, providing flexibility in educational qualifications.
Experience: The position requires at least 7 years of proven professional experience in the field of gender in humanitarian action, gender equality, or related fields. Additionally, candidates should have at least 3 years of proven experience in research and/or multi-stakeholder coordination. Experience working within the United Nations System on GiHA is highly desirable, as is experience in conflict settings, which adds to the candidate's suitability for the role.
Languages: Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is essential for effective communication and reporting. Fluency in Arabic will be considered an asset, given the context of the role in Sudan. Additionally, working knowledge of another official UN language is desirable, which would enhance the candidate's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and contribute to international collaboration.
