Job Overview:
The ILO is seeking a professional copy editor and proofreader to edit and proofread three policy papers focused on extending social security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security to informal workers in the agricultural, construction, and manufacturing sectors in Kurdish Sorani. The consultant will work under the supervision of the ILO Chief Technical Advisor on Social Security and collaborate closely with the National Programme Officer. The role involves reviewing and editing a total of 120 pages across three documents, ensuring clarity, continuity, and consistency in the arguments presented. The consultant will be responsible for checking direct quotations, ensuring the accuracy of data, and aligning content with ILO house style. The position requires a keen eye for detail and the ability to communicate effectively with the ILO technical team regarding proposed changes.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant's duties will include:
  • Reviewing and editing three documents totaling 120 pages, focusing on content flow and clarity of argument.
  • Editing chapters and narrative sections to ensure clarity and continuity of the reports' arguments and political focus.
  • Checking direct quotations and ensuring consistency in mechanics and internal facts.
  • Ensuring conformity with ILO house style and checking the completeness and style of references.
  • Aligning content page numbering with the body of the document.
  • Conducting final copy editing and proofreading after the design and layout are completed.
  • Consulting with the ILO technical team on proposed changes and incorporating feedback.
  • Coordinating edits and revisions, expecting at least two rounds of revision for each report.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires the following qualifications:
  • Native speaker of Kurdish Sorani, with proficiency in both spoken and written forms.
  • A degree in linguistics, translation, interpretation, literature studies, or creative writing. A minor in Kurdish language is advantageous.
  • A minimum of 5 years of proven experience in linguistic services, including translation, interpretation, and editing in Kurdish Sorani.
  • Demonstrated experience in similar projects, particularly with the UN, with prior experience with the ILO being a significant advantage.
  • Certificates in translation and interpretation will be considered an asset.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a degree in linguistics, translation, interpretation, literature studies, or creative writing. A minor in Kurdish language is preferred, as it demonstrates a deeper understanding of the language and its nuances, which is essential for effective editing and proofreading.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have at least 5 years of relevant experience in linguistic services, specifically in translation, interpretation, and editing in Kurdish Sorani. This experience should include working on similar projects, particularly those related to social security or labor rights, and preferably with organizations like the UN or ILO.

Languages:
The mandatory language for this position is Kurdish Sorani, as the consultant will be editing and proofreading documents in this language. Proficiency in English is also required for communication and submission of proposals. Additional languages may be beneficial but are not mandatory.

Additional Notes:
The consultancy engagement will last from 15 December 2024 to 31 January 2025, encompassing a total of fifteen working days. The consultant is expected to deliver three copy-edited reports by 15 January 2025, which will account for 75% of the payment, and three proofread reports by 31 January 2025, which will account for the remaining 25%. Proposals must be submitted in English, and candidates should include their CV/resume, specifying their education and work experience, along with their rate for editing and proofreading services. The deadline for proposal submission is 1 December 2024.
