Job Details
Job Posting Organization:The European Space Agency (ESA) is an intergovernmental organization dedicated to the exploration of space. Established in 1975, ESA has grown to include 22 member states and employs over 2,200 staff members. The agency operates across multiple countries, focusing on various aspects of space exploration, satellite technology, and scientific research. Its mission is to provide Europe with a space capability and to foster international cooperation in space exploration and research.
Job Overview:
The Internal Research Fellow position in Spacecraft Simulation for Integrated Mission Design is a critical role within the Mission Analysis Section of the Flight Dynamics Division at the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC). This position involves developing innovative solutions to support users across ESA and the broader ESA community in spacecraft mission development, research studies, and operations analysis. The successful candidate will work on creating a lightweight software system capable of performing high-fidelity, differentiable attitude and orbit control simulations of spacecraft. This role requires collaboration with potential users to understand their needs and to ensure that the developed solutions are user-friendly and adaptable. The research aims to complement existing operational simulators and provide a robust simulation suite for immediate and future research, validation, and operations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Internal Research Fellow include:
- Developing a lightweight software system for spacecraft simulation, focusing on high-fidelity attitude and orbit control.
- Collaborating with study teams to integrate onboard autonomy simulations and support mission analysis.
- Conducting research to enhance the capabilities of the simulation suite, including automatic differentiation for optimal design and sensitivity analysis.
- Engaging with users to gather feedback and understand their requirements for simulation tools.
- Addressing applied research challenges in the design and implementation of the simulation system.
- Supporting the development of AOCS simulation integrated with orbit simulation for future autonomous navigation projects.
- Contributing to the establishment of a community of users for the simulation suite and providing training and support as needed.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess sound knowledge of complex systems simulations and strong software development skills in Python and C++. Experience with modern software development environments, including GitLab and CI/CD, is essential. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate the ability to conduct research autonomously and have a breadth of exposure from past research activities. Good interpersonal and communication skills are necessary for working in a multicultural environment, both independently and as part of a team.
Educational Background:
Applicants should have recently completed, or be close to completion of, a PhD in a mathematical or engineering discipline related to mathematical modelling, control systems, or complex systems simulation. Preference will be given to candidates who have obtained their PhD within the past five years, ensuring that the selected individual is well-versed in the latest research and methodologies in the field.
Experience:
The position requires candidates to have a strong background in research, particularly in the area of spacecraft simulation and control systems. Experience in software development and familiarity with simulation tools and methodologies are crucial. Candidates should also have a proven track record of conducting independent research and contributing to collaborative projects.
Languages:
The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these languages is mandatory, while knowledge of another Member State language would be considered an asset. This requirement ensures effective communication within the diverse workforce at ESA.
Additional Notes:
This position is classified as an Internal Research Fellow and is a full-time role. The contract duration and specific compensation details will be discussed during the recruitment process. ESA is committed to diversity and inclusiveness, encouraging applications from all qualified candidates regardless of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, beliefs, age, disability, or other characteristics. The agency also values the contributions of individuals with disabilities and seeks to provide necessary support in the workplace. Applicants must be eligible to access technology and hardware subject to European and US export control regulations, and successful candidates will undergo basic screening before appointment.
