Job Overview:
The Spacecraft Operations Engineer will be part of the Earth Observation Missions Division within the Directorate of Operations at ESA. This role is crucial for managing and implementing spacecraft operations for the Copernicus Sentinels missions. The engineer will be responsible for overseeing the operational aspects of satellite missions from their initial phases through to routine operations. The position requires a proactive approach to mission operations, including the preparation and execution of operational plans, anomaly resolution, and performance evaluation. The engineer will work closely with the Spacecraft Operations Manager and will be involved in various aspects of mission planning and execution, ensuring that all operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. This role also involves interfacing with various stakeholders, including industry partners and user communities, to support mission objectives and operational requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties of the Spacecraft Operations Engineer include assisting the Spacecraft Operations Managers (SOMs) in defining, preparing, and executing mission operations. This includes managing nominal, special, and contingency operations, as well as investigating and resolving spacecraft and ground segment anomalies. The engineer will also be responsible for performance evaluation and reporting. Additionally, the engineer may act as the SOM when delegated and will assist in the specification, development, validation, maintenance, and evolution of ground segment systems and operational products. Interfacing with other areas within ESA and external partners is essential for ensuring comprehensive mission operations. The engineer will provide expert support to ESA programs and activities, participate in mission reviews, and prepare for new missions to be operated by the Unit or Division.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a master's degree in engineering or physics. Additionally, a minimum of three years of direct experience in flight operations is required. Candidates should have demonstrated experience with planning tools used for multi-instrument planning, including development, tailoring, configuration, setup, and automation. Experience interfacing with external and international partners regarding instrument operations is also necessary. Strong teamwork capabilities, high self-motivation, and the ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams are essential qualifications for this position.

Educational Background:
A master's degree in engineering or physics is mandatory for this position. This educational background provides the necessary technical foundation for understanding spacecraft operations and the complexities involved in mission management.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of three years of relevant professional experience in flight operations. This experience should include direct involvement in spacecraft operations, mission planning, and coordination with various stakeholders in the aerospace sector. Candidates with less than four years of experience may be considered for a lower grade level (A1).

Languages:
The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good command of one of these languages is required for the position. Knowledge of an additional language from another Member State would be considered an asset, enhancing communication and collaboration within the diverse workforce at ESA.
