Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research institution established in 195
It is headquartered in Meyrin, Switzerland, and is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics. CERN employs over 2,500 staff members and collaborates with thousands of scientists from around the world. The organization operates in multiple countries and is dedicated to probing the fundamental structure of the universe through advanced scientific instruments and experiments. Diversity and inclusion are core values at CERN, reflecting its commitment to fostering a collaborative and innovative research environment.
Job Overview: The position offers a unique opportunity for post-doctoral research in applied physics and engineering within CERN's Accelerator Systems departments. The successful candidate will engage in cutting-edge research focused on Accelerator Physics and System Design. Responsibilities include designing, developing, and optimizing beam transfer systems that support CERN's accelerator complex and future projects. The role involves conducting accelerator physics studies, which encompass beam optics design, particle tracking, and multi-physics simulations to enhance system design, validation, and performance optimization. Additionally, the candidate will develop functional specifications for beam transfer systems based on accelerator physics requirements and engineering constraints, implement modern commissioning strategies utilizing automation and data-driven techniques, and analyze beam and system performance to improve operational efficiency and reliability.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the position include:
Designing and developing beam transfer systems that support CERN's accelerator complex and future projects.
Performing accelerator physics studies, including beam optics design and particle tracking.
Conducting multi-physics simulations to support system design and performance optimization.
Developing functional specifications for beam transfer systems based on physics and engineering requirements.
Implementing modern commissioning strategies using automation and numerical optimization techniques.
Analyzing beam and system performance to enhance beam quality and operational efficiency.
Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to achieve shared project objectives.
Communicating effectively in both scientific and technical contexts.
Working independently while contributing to collaborative research efforts.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong background in applied physics, engineering, or a closely related field. Research experience in applied physics and engineering, particularly related to the design, development, or operation of experimental systems, is essential. The candidate should demonstrate a commitment to pursuing a career in research or academia and be motivated to contribute to large-scale experimental programs in an international research environment. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are required, along with the ability to work collaboratively within large, international teams.
Educational Background: A PhD in Applied Physics, Engineering, or a closely related field is required. Candidates must have completed their PhD by the application deadline or be within six months of obtaining it. The position is open to individuals who have no more than three years of research experience following the completion of their PhD, although candidates with up to six years of experience may be considered in exceptional cases.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have a maximum of three years of research experience post-PhD. However, candidates with up to six years of experience may be considered under exceptional circumstances. Prior experience in experimental systems and technologies is highly valued, as is a demonstrated ability to work in collaborative research environments.
Languages: A good command of English or French is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in either language will facilitate effective communication within the diverse and international team at CERN. Additional language skills may be considered an asset but are not required.
Additional Notes: The position offers an employment contract for an initial duration of 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to 36 months.
