Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research institution established in 195
  • It is located in Meyrin, Switzerland, and is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics. CERN operates the world's largest particle physics laboratory and is home to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the most powerful particle accelerator ever built. The organization employs over 2,500 staff members and collaborates with thousands of scientists from around the globe, representing more than 100 nationalities. CERN's mission is to uncover the fundamental structure of the universe by studying the basic constituents of matter and the forces that govern their interactions. Diversity and inclusion are core values at CERN, and the organization strives to create an environment where all individuals can thrive and contribute to scientific advancements.

Job Overview:
The position offered is a post-doctoral research role within the Accelerator Systems departments at CERN, focusing on applied physics and engineering. The successful candidate will engage in research related to Accelerator Physics and System Design, which encompasses a variety of tasks aimed at enhancing CERN's accelerator complex and future projects. Responsibilities include designing, developing, and optimizing beam transfer systems, conducting accelerator physics studies, and performing multi-physics simulations. The role also involves developing functional specifications based on physics requirements and engineering constraints, implementing modern commissioning strategies, and analyzing beam and system performance to improve operational efficiency and reliability. This position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about research and eager to contribute to large-scale experimental programs in an international setting.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities for this position include:
  • Designing, developing, and optimizing beam transfer systems that support CERN's accelerator complex and future projects.
  • Conducting accelerator physics studies, including beam optics design, particle tracking, and multi-physics simulations to support system design and performance optimization.
  • Developing functional specifications for beam transfer systems based on accelerator physics requirements and engineering constraints.
  • Implementing modern commissioning strategies that utilize automation, numerical optimization, and data-driven techniques.
  • Analyzing beam and system performance to enhance beam quality, operational efficiency, and system reliability.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and contributing to shared project objectives while also working independently when necessary.
  • Communicating effectively in both scientific and technical environments, ensuring clarity in project goals and outcomes.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in applied physics, engineering, or a closely related field. Research experience in applied physics and engineering is essential, particularly in the design, development, or operation of experimental systems. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a keen interest in pursuing a career in research or academia and be motivated to actively participate in research projects. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are required, along with the ability to work collaboratively within large, international teams. Effective communication skills are necessary for success in this role, as is the ability to work independently while contributing to collective project goals.

Educational Background:
A PhD in Applied Physics, Engineering, or a closely related field is required for this position. Candidates must have completed their PhD by the application deadline or be on track to obtain it within six months. This educational background is crucial as it provides the foundational knowledge and skills necessary for conducting advanced research in accelerator physics and engineering.

Experience:
Candidates should have no more than three years of research experience following the completion of their PhD degree. However, candidates with up to six years of experience may be considered in exceptional cases. It is important that applicants have not previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract, ensuring that the opportunity is available for new candidates.

Languages:
A good command of English or French is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in either language is essential for effective communication within the international research environment at CERN. Additional language skills may be considered an asset but are not required.

Additional Notes:
The position offers an employment contract for an initial duration of 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to 36 months. The successful candidate will receive a monthly stipend of 7004 Swiss francs (net of tax), along with comprehensive health coverage for themselves, their spouse, and children, as well as membership in the CERN Pension Fund. Additional benefits may include an installation grant, family allowances, and travel expenses depending on individual circumstances. The role also provides 2.5 days of paid leave per month, with a total of 30 days of paid leave per year plus two weeks of annual closure. Candidates must be nationals of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State, and specific eligibility criteria apply. Applications must be submitted by the deadline of 05.10.2026 at midnight (23:59 PM CET), and all required documents must be uploaded to the application profile.
