Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research organization established in 195
  • It is located in Meyrin, Switzerland, and is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics. CERN operates the world's largest particle physics laboratory and is home to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the most powerful particle accelerator ever built. The organization employs over 2,500 staff members and collaborates with thousands of scientists from around the globe, representing more than 100 nationalities. CERN's mission is to uncover the fundamental structure of the universe by studying the basic constituents of matter and the forces that govern their interactions. Diversity and inclusion are core values at CERN, and the organization strives to create an environment where all individuals can thrive and contribute to scientific advancements.

Job Overview:
The position offered is a post-doctoral research role in the field of applied physics and engineering, specifically within the Accelerator Systems departments at CERN. The successful candidate will engage in cutting-edge research focused on Accelerator Physics and System Design. Responsibilities will include designing, developing, and optimizing beam transfer systems that support CERN's accelerator complex and future projects. The role will also involve conducting accelerator physics studies, which encompass beam optics design, particle tracking, and multi-physics simulations to validate and enhance system performance. The candidate will be expected to develop functional specifications for beam transfer systems based on both accelerator physics requirements and engineering constraints. Additionally, the role requires the implementation of modern commissioning strategies that leverage automation, numerical optimization, and data-driven techniques. Analyzing beam and system performance to enhance beam quality, operational efficiency, and system reliability will also be a key aspect of the position.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the position include:
  • Designing and developing beam transfer systems that are integral to CERN's accelerator complex and future projects.
  • Conducting accelerator physics studies, including beam optics design and particle tracking.
  • Performing multi-physics simulations to support system design and validation.
  • Developing functional specifications for beam transfer systems based on accelerator physics requirements and engineering constraints.
  • Implementing modern commissioning strategies utilizing automation and data-driven techniques.
  • Analyzing beam and system performance to improve beam quality and operational efficiency.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to achieve shared project objectives.
  • Communicating effectively within a scientific and technical environment.
  • Working independently while contributing to collaborative research efforts.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in applied physics, engineering, or a closely related field. Research experience in applied physics and engineering, particularly related to the design, development, or operation of experimental systems, is essential. The candidate should demonstrate a keen interest in pursuing a career in research or academia and be motivated to contribute to large-scale experimental programs in an international research environment. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are required, along with the ability to work collaboratively within large, international teams. Effective communication skills in a scientific and technical context are also necessary.

Educational Background:
A PhD in the fields of Applied Physics and Engineering is required for this position. Candidates must have completed their PhD by the application deadline or be within six months of obtaining it. The educational background should reflect a strong foundation in both theoretical and practical aspects of applied physics and engineering.

Experience:
Candidates should have no more than three years of research experience following the completion of their PhD degree. However, candidates with up to six years of experience may be considered under exceptional circumstances. It is important that applicants have not previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.

Languages:
A good knowledge of English or French is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in either language will facilitate effective communication within the international research environment at CERN. Additional language skills may be considered advantageous but are not required.

Additional Notes:
The position offers an employment contract for an initial duration of 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to 36 months. The monthly stipend is 7004 Swiss francs (net of tax), with potential adjustments based on the candidate's degree. CERN provides comprehensive health coverage for the employee, their spouse, and children, along with membership in the CERN Pension Fund. Additional benefits may include family, child, and infant allowances, as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva, depending on individual circumstances. Employees are entitled to 2.5 days of paid leave per month, totaling 30 days of paid leave per year, plus an annual closure period of two weeks. Candidates must be nationals of CERN Member States or Associate Member States, with specific restrictions on applications from certain nationalities. All applications must be submitted by the deadline of 05.10.2026 at midnight (23:59 PM CET).
