Job Posting Organization: The European Space Agency (ESA) is an intergovernmental organization dedicated to the exploration of space. Established in 1975, ESA has grown to include 22 member states and employs over 2,200 staff members. The agency's mission is to shape the development of Europe's space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world. ESA operates across various domains, including Earth observation, human spaceflight, exploration, and space science, and collaborates with numerous international partners to advance space technology and research.
Job Overview: The Luxembourgish National Graduate Trainee in Space Safety Programme Coordination position offers a unique opportunity for recent Master’s graduates to gain hands-on experience in the field of space safety at ESA. The role is designed to provide practical exposure to the operations of the Space Safety Programme (S2P), which is responsible for leading missions and developing technologies related to space weather, planetary defense, and space debris management. As a trainee, you will support the Head of Office in various strategic and operational tasks, contributing to the formulation of S2P’s strategy and policy, and assisting in the coordination of activities with Member States and international partners. This position is ideal for individuals looking to build a career in space policy and management, as it involves working closely with a diverse team of experts in a dynamic environment.
Duties and Responsibilities: As a Luxembourgish National Graduate Trainee, your responsibilities will include conducting detailed long-term studies to support the strategic evolution of the Space Safety Programme, managing operational tasks with a degree of independence, and coordinating initiatives such as the Zero Debris events. You will also be responsible for preparing reports, background materials, and presentations for both internal and external audiences, supporting the organization of S2P events across Europe, and adapting to various tasks as required by the evolving landscape of space safety. Your role will require collaboration with various stakeholders, including industry partners and EU institutions, to ensure effective communication and outreach.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a recent Master’s degree or be in the final year of their studies in fields such as space policy, law, engineering, or sciences. A dual expertise in social sciences and engineering/science is considered a strong asset. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate initiative, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment. Previous experience in international teams is advantageous, and candidates should be motivated and have clear professional goals that align with the objectives of the Space Safety Programme.
Educational Background: The educational requirement for this position is a Master’s degree in a relevant field, such as space policy, law, engineering, or sciences. Candidates who are nearing completion of their degree are also eligible to apply. A background that combines social sciences with technical disciplines will be viewed favorably, as it aligns with the interdisciplinary nature of the work at ESA.
Experience: The position is aimed at recent graduates, so while extensive professional experience is not required, any relevant internships, project work, or extracurricular activities that demonstrate knowledge of the space sector and its policies will be beneficial. Candidates should be prepared to showcase their understanding of ESA's programs and projects during the selection process.
Languages: The working languages at ESA are English and French. A good command of one of these languages is mandatory, while knowledge of another Member State language would be considered an asset. This requirement reflects the international nature of the agency and the need for effective communication across diverse teams.
Additional Notes: This position is a National Graduate Trainee appointment, which typically lasts for a fixed term. The role is full-time and based at ESA Headquarters in Paris, France. The agency is committed to diversity and inclusiveness, welcoming applications from all qualified candidates regardless of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religious beliefs, age, disability, or other characteristics. Applicants must be nationals of Luxembourg or permanent residents of Luxembourg with the nationality of an ESA Member State, Associate Member, or Cooperating State.
