Job Overview: The Innovation and Digital Agriculture Specialist will play a crucial role in strengthening digital agriculture systems, data infrastructure, and digital public goods in Pacific Island countries. The position involves supporting subregional and national digital agriculture readiness assessments, implementing e-agriculture strategies, deploying digital farmer registries, and providing capacity-building and technical advisory services across various regional and national projects. The specialist will work closely with government counterparts, the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, and other stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of digital agriculture initiatives that enhance productivity and sustainability in the agricultural sector.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Innovation and Digital Agriculture Specialist include supporting the design and implementation of national and subregional digital agriculture readiness assessments and investment roadmaps across Pacific Island countries. The specialist will assist in the implementation of national e-agriculture strategies, identifying and adapting emerging digital tools and innovations relevant to smallholder agriculture. Responsibilities also include deploying and configuring Digital Farmer Registries (DFR), applying a product-management approach to digital public goods, and establishing mechanisms to gather user feedback for continuous improvement of digital products and services. The specialist will deliver training and capacity-building workshops for government extension staff, provide technical guidance on data governance and interoperability, and support the identification of digital solutions for market linkages and climate resilience. Additionally, the specialist will prepare technical briefs and policy notes to inform national and subregional digital agriculture strategies, contribute to discussions on the ethical application of AI in agriculture, and manage project activities, procurement, and staffing throughout the project lifecycle.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree from an institution recognized by the International Association of Universities (IAU)/UNESCO in fields such as Information Technology, Computer Science, Data Science, Smart Agriculture, Agriculture Engineering, or a related discipline. Those with a bachelor's degree are required to have two additional years of relevant professional experience. A minimum of three years of relevant experience in digital agriculture, agricultural information systems, and ICT for development is essential, along with demonstrated experience in planning, implementing, and supporting technical projects. A working knowledge of English at Level C is mandatory.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Data Science, Smart Agriculture, Agriculture Engineering, or a related field. Candidates with a bachelor's degree must have additional professional experience to meet the qualifications. The educational qualifications should be from institutions recognized by the International Association of Universities (IAU)/UNESCO, ensuring that candidates have a solid foundation in the relevant technical and scientific disciplines necessary for the role.
Experience: The position requires at least three years of relevant experience in digital agriculture, agricultural information systems, and ICT for development. Candidates should have demonstrated experience in the planning, implementation, and support of technical projects, particularly those related to digital agriculture initiatives. Experience in supporting national or subregional digital agriculture or e-agriculture initiatives, as well as familiarity with agricultural data governance and interoperability, is highly valued. Additionally, experience in delivering training and capacity-building activities, preferably for government counterparts in a development context, is essential for success in this role.
