Job Overview: The UNEP India Cooling Expert Consultant will play a pivotal role in supporting the Mitigation Branch and UNEP India Office in the implementation of the Cool Coalition workstreams in India, specifically focusing on sustainable urban cooling. The consultant will be responsible for a range of analytical and technical activities, including providing technical assistance to developers on passive and sustainable cooling solutions, conducting research, and developing knowledge products and tools. The role also involves building energy simulations, creating guidelines and training materials on passive cooling, delivering training sessions, and assisting in the development of funding proposals. This position is crucial for advancing sustainable cooling solutions that align with climate mitigation goals and contribute to the overall objectives of the Cool Coalition.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant's duties will include:
Providing technical handholding to developers on passive and sustainable cooling delivery, ensuring that best practices are followed.
Undertaking comprehensive research to support the development of knowledge products and tools that facilitate sustainable urban cooling initiatives.
Conducting building energy simulations to assess the effectiveness of various cooling strategies and technologies.
Developing guidelines and training materials focused on passive cooling techniques, aimed at educating stakeholders and promoting sustainable practices.
Delivering training sessions and providing ongoing support to stakeholders involved in sustainable cooling projects.
Assisting in the development of funding proposals to secure financial resources for sustainable cooling initiatives.
Collaborating with national and subnational governments, real estate developers, and other stakeholders to implement sustainable urban cooling solutions effectively.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in Energy Policy, Engineering, Economics, Environmental Sciences, Physics, or a related discipline. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted. A minimum of eight years of relevant work experience is required, with a focus on energy, cities, and environmental issues. Practical experience in multi-stakeholder project development, financing, partnership building, and administration, particularly within the sustainable energy context, is highly desirable. Qualifying years of experience will be calculated following the receipt of the first-level university degree recognized by the United Nations.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in a relevant field such as Energy Policy, Engineering, Economics, Environmental Sciences, or Physics. Candidates with a first-level university degree may be considered if they have two additional years of qualifying experience. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of sustainable urban cooling and the technical aspects of energy management.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of eight years of professional experience in a relevant field, with a strong emphasis on energy, urban development, and environmental sustainability. Candidates should have a proven track record in multi-stakeholder project development and implementation, particularly in contexts related to sustainable energy solutions. Experience in partnership building and financing within the sustainable energy sector is also highly valued, as it will contribute to the successful execution of the consultant's responsibilities.
Languages: Fluency in written and oral English is mandatory for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Additionally, knowledge of Hindi is required to facilitate communication and collaboration with local stakeholders in India. Proficiency in another UN language would be considered an advantage, enhancing the consultant's ability to engage with a diverse range of partners and stakeholders.
