The organization operates in various countries around the world, providing financial assistance, policy advice, and technical assistance to its member nations. The IMF's work focuses on macroeconomic stability, financial sector stability, and sustainable economic growth, making it a key player in the global economy.

Job Overview:
The Economist Program (EP) 2027 is designed for recent PhD graduates who are eager to apply their rigorous economic research to real-world policy challenges. Participants in the program will engage in substantive work from day one, contributing to policy analysis, country work, and research that informs the IMF's operations across its 191 member nations. The program lasts for three years and includes two departmental assignments, providing broad exposure to the IMF's work and helping participants build a strong foundation in macroeconomic policy and surveillance. Successful completion of the program typically leads to permanent positions within the IMF, allowing participants to continue their careers as economists in various departments.

Duties and Responsibilities:
As an Economist Program participant, your responsibilities will vary based on your departmental assignment but may include: analyzing economic developments and risks for specific countries or regions; contributing to IMF country engagement, including Article IV consultations and IMF-supported programs; developing tailored policy advice based on a country's economic circumstances; assessing fiscal, monetary, exchange rate, financial sector, and external sector policies; examining macro-financial linkages and risks to economic stability; analyzing fiscal and external debt sustainability; contributing to policy and design" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">program design; conducting analytical work and research related to IMF policy priorities; collaborating with other IMF economists on reports, working papers, and policy publications; applying economic theory, quantitative methods, and data analysis to real-world policy questions; and helping member countries strengthen their economic institutions, policies, and technical expertise through training and technical assistance.

Required Qualifications:
To be eligible for the Economist Program, candidates must be recent PhD graduates or within one year of completing a PhD in macroeconomics or a related field. A solid understanding of macroeconomics is essential, along with the ability to clearly explain complex economic linkages. Candidates must be under 34 years old when the program begins in September 2027, be citizens of an IMF member country, and demonstrate excellent written and spoken English. Strong analytical, quantitative, and computer skills are also required. The IMF encourages applicants from various economics fields, provided they have a strong foundation in macroeconomic analysis and a keen interest in applying economics to policy questions.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a PhD in macroeconomics or a related field, or be within one year of completing their PhD. The educational background should include a solid grounding in macroeconomic theory and practice, as well as experience in quantitative methods and data analysis. The IMF values diverse academic backgrounds, so applicants from fields such as finance, labor economics, development economics, and gender economics are also encouraged to apply, provided they have a strong understanding of macroeconomic principles.

Experience:
The position is targeted at recent PhD graduates or those who are within one year of completing their PhD. Therefore, candidates are expected to have a foundational level of experience in economic research and analysis, particularly in macroeconomics. While prior work experience is not a strict requirement, any relevant internships, research assistantships, or academic projects that demonstrate analytical skills and economic understanding will be advantageous.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is mandatory, as candidates must demonstrate excellent written and spoken communication skills. While English is the primary language of the IMF, knowledge of additional languages can be beneficial, particularly if they are relevant to the countries or regions being analyzed. However, the focus remains on strong English language skills for effective communication within the organization and with member countries.

Additional Notes:
The Economist Program is a full-time position with a duration of three years, consisting of two departmental assignments. The program is not a trainee program; participants are hired as economists and are expected to take on substantive responsibilities from the outset. The recruitment process follows an annual cycle, with applications typically opening in late September, interviews and assessments occurring between October and January, and offers being made in early February. The program is designed to provide broad exposure to the IMF's work and support a long-term career as an economist within the organization. For non-U.S. citizens, visa support will be provided by the IMF to facilitate work authorization in the United States.
