The UN Resident Coordinator Offices (RCO) play a crucial role in this mission, led by an independent UN Resident Coordinator who represents the UN Secretary-General at the country level. The Development Operations Coordination Office (DCO) oversees the resident coordinator system and ensures alignment with corporate priorities. The DCO has undergone recalibration to support the acceleration of the 2030 Agenda, focusing on data, digital innovation, and a mission-driven culture. Job Overview:
The UN Economist position involves providing substantive economic analysis and evidence-based advice on sustainable development, economic transformation, and SDG financing. The incumbent will research, analyze, and present economic and social data, focusing on trends and best practices in economic transformation, green transitions, and digital innovation. The role requires conducting policy analysis to assist the Resident Coordinator and UN Country Team in identifying challenges and opportunities for advancing the SDGs, with a strong emphasis on gender equality and inclusivity. The Economist will also support the implementation of corporate guidelines related to economic transformation and SDG financing, ensuring coherence with the UN's strategic objectives. This position is integral to the UN's sustainable development programming cycle, contributing to the Common Country Analysis and the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in Economics. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Successful completion of programs in data analytics or related fields is advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of sustainable development theories and concepts, as well as the ability to conduct independent research and analysis. Professionalism, accountability, and effective planning and organizing skills are essential for this role.
Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Economics is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Completion of degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics, or data science is considered an advantage.
Experience:
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, macroeconomic or socioeconomic policy, or development economics is required. Candidates should have experience in conducting economic and policy analysis, translating development trends into actionable policy options, and working with various stakeholders in support of sustainable development priorities. Experience in SDG financing and innovative financing approaches is desirable, as is experience in knowledge management and the preparation of analytical products in the context of development cooperation.
Languages:
French is required for this position, with a minimum proficiency of UN Level II in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. English is desirable, with a minimum proficiency of UN Level I in the same skills. Candidates should be able to communicate effectively in both languages, as they are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
Additional Notes:
This is a fixed-term position with an initial appointment period of one year, subject to availability of funds and budgetary approval. The position is open to nationals of Benin, and candidates must be recruited within the country or commuting distance of the office. If no suitable local candidates are found, Benin nationals residing elsewhere may be considered, with the candidate responsible for relocation costs. Conduct policy analysis to support the Resident Coordinator and UNCT in identifying challenges and opportunities for SDG progress. Implement and localize corporate guidelines related to economic transformation and SDG financing. Prepare analytical materials and policy papers on economic transformation and SDG financing. Monitor economic developments and analyze their implications for sustainable development.
- Support partnerships with national counterparts and stakeholders on economic transformation and SDG financing. Engage with government, UN entities, IFIs, and civil society to promote collaboration on sustainable economic development. Facilitate information-sharing and joint analytical work across the UN system.
- Contribute to the UN sustainable development programming cycle by providing economic analysis for the Common Country Analysis and UNSDCF. Support the development of joint programmes related to economic transformation and SDG financing.
- Enhance knowledge management on economic transformation and SDG financing by participating in communities of practice and sharing lessons learned. Document and disseminate knowledge generated through analytical activities.
