Job Overview: The IDB Group is seeking an active graduate student to join as an intern under the Consultant modality for the 2027 Winter Internship Program. This competitive paid opportunity is based at the IDB Headquarters and is designed for university students from member countries to gain insights into development work and corporate management while acquiring professional experience through on-the-job learning. The intern will support the Transparency and Integrity thematic area within the Institutional Capacity of the State Division (ICS). The role involves developing and testing artificial intelligence (AI) tools to facilitate the organization and analysis of large collections of government and public records. The intern will collaborate with specialists in governance, data, and technology to transform documents and databases into practical tools that enhance user access to information. The focus will be on creating user-friendly applications that allow non-technical experts to effectively utilize complex data, thereby contributing to financial integrity use cases such as anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT). The intern will gain hands-on experience in designing and prototyping AI applications and interfaces that operate over extensive administrative databases, ultimately helping to detect risk patterns and follow financial transactions across fragmented datasets.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for supporting the design of implementation blueprints and reference architectures for AI applications that query and present large structured and unstructured data sources. Key tasks include prototyping retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and graph-based retrieval (GraphRAG) pipelines, which involve parsing, chunking, embedding, indexing, hybrid search, re-ranking, and citation of sources over knowledge graphs. The intern will design, program, and evaluate AI agents and orchestrated multi-step workflows, applying responsible-AI safeguards on privacy and explainability. Additionally, the intern will build pipelines to transform digitized documents into structured databases, support entity resolution, and conduct AI-assisted network analysis to reveal ownership chains and transaction paths. Documentation of the work through architecture diagrams and presentations for both technical and non-technical stakeholders will also be required.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must be active graduate students (master’s or Ph.D.) in engineering-based fields such as Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Applied Mathematics, or related disciplines from an accredited university. The graduation date must be after the internship period. Fluency in English is mandatory, and a working knowledge of another Bank language (Spanish, French, or Portuguese) is advantageous. Key skills include continuous learning, collaboration, client focus, effective communication, and innovation. Soft skills such as being result-driven, collaborative, innovative, and self-motivated are essential. Technical skills required include strong programming abilities in Python and SQL, experience with structured and unstructured data, familiarity with machine learning applications, and understanding of databases and data modeling. Experience with AI application development, retrieval-augmented generation, and network analysis is desirable, along with familiarity with various tools and technologies related to AI and data processing.
Educational Background: The position requires candidates to be active graduate students pursuing a master's or Ph.D. in relevant fields such as Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or Statistics. The educational institution must be accredited, and candidates must have completed at least 50% of their coursework by the time of application. The graduation date should be after the internship period, ensuring that students are still enrolled during the internship.
Experience: Candidates should possess a level of experience that aligns with being an active graduate student. While prior professional experience is not explicitly required, familiarity with relevant technologies and concepts in AI, data analysis, and software development will be beneficial. Experience with AI application development and related tools is desirable but not mandatory, as the internship is designed for students to learn and grow in their professional capabilities.
Languages: Fluency in English is a mandatory requirement for this position. Additionally, having a working knowledge of one of the other Bank languages, which include Spanish, French, or Portuguese, is considered a plus and may enhance the candidate's profile.
Additional Notes: The internship is a full-time position requiring 40 hours of work per week from January 16th to March 15th, 202
Candidates must submit their resumes, academic transcripts, and a university letter certifying their student status when applying. If an unofficial transcript is submitted, an official one will be required if the candidate progresses in the application process. Applications without the requested documentation will be disqualified. The internship contract is for two months, and candidates must be nationals of an IDB member country. Additionally, candidates must not have family members working at the IDB or IDB Invest and must be first-time participants in the internship program. The IDB Group promotes a culture of inclusion and provides reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities during the application process.
