Job Overview: The Internal Research Fellow (PostDoc) position in Space Environments and Effects is designed for individuals who have a strong background in radiation physics and are eager to contribute to the European Space Agency's mission. Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Internal Research Fellow include:
Conducting independent research on ionising radiation transport and its effects on spacecraft and instrumentation.
Developing and refining models and software tools for radiation analysis, particularly within the Geant4 and GRAS frameworks.
Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to assess the impact of space radiation on various ESA missions.
Preparing and presenting research findings to both internal and external stakeholders.
Contributing to the development of mitigation strategies for radiation effects on spacecraft.
Engaging in outreach and dissemination activities to promote the findings of the research.
Writing research proposals and reports, including a detailed research proposal as part of the application process.
Participating in team meetings and contributing to the overall goals of the Space Environments and Effects Section.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a PhD in radiation physics, space physics, or information technology, ideally completed within the last five years. Additionally, experience with space radiation environments and effects simulation software, particularly Geant4 and GRAS, is highly desirable. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential, as the fellow will work in a multicultural environment and must be able to collaborate effectively with team members and external partners. A demonstrated ability to conduct research autonomously and a proactive approach to problem-solving are also required.
Educational Background: A PhD in radiation physics, space physics, or information technology is required for this position. Candidates should have a strong academic background that includes coursework and research experience relevant to the field of space environments and radiation effects. The educational qualifications should be complemented by practical experience in using simulation software and conducting research in a laboratory or field setting.
Experience: The ideal candidate will have a background that includes both academic and practical experience in radiation physics and space environments. Experience with Monte Carlo simulation techniques and programming languages relevant to the development of radiation analysis tools is an asset. Candidates should also have a record of research publications or contributions to scientific projects that demonstrate their expertise in the field. The ability to work independently and as part of a team is crucial, as is the capacity to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is one of the working languages of ESA. Proficiency in French is also required, and knowledge of another language from a Member State would be considered an asset. Additional Notes: This position is a full-time appointment with a focus on research and development within the Space Environments and Effects Section at ESA.
