Job Overview:
The National Consultant for Provision of Translation/Interpretation will play a crucial role in ensuring effective communication and accessibility of information and materials in the local language, Bahasa Indonesia. The consultant will be responsible for providing high-quality translation and interpretation services from English to Bahasa Indonesia and vice versa, as well as simultaneous translation for UN Women events scheduled from 2026 to 202
  • This position requires a deep understanding of gender issues and the ability to convey complex concepts accurately in both languages. The consultant will report to the Communication Team and collaborate with the broader UN Women Indonesia team, depending on the specific assignments. The role is essential for facilitating communication during events, meetings, and workshops, ensuring that all participants can engage fully regardless of their language proficiency. The consultant will also be expected to conduct terminological research to maintain accuracy and consistency in translations, thereby contributing to the overall effectiveness of UN Women's initiatives in Indonesia.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant's duties will include:
  • Translation Services: Translating various publications, reports, documents, presentations, studies, briefs, advocacy, and communications materials from English to Bahasa Indonesia and vice versa. Revising translations as necessary based on feedback from UN Women Indonesia and resubmitting revised documents within agreed timeframes.
  • Interpretation Services: Providing simultaneous interpretation during events, meetings, workshops, conferences, and field missions organized by UN Women Indonesia. Interpreting speeches, presentations, discussions, and other oral communications from Bahasa Indonesia to English and vice versa.
  • Terminology and Quality Assurance: Conducting thorough terminological research using UN/UN Women terminology and other resources to ensure the accuracy and consistency of translations. Taking full responsibility for the quality and accuracy of all translated documents before submission.
  • Output and Payments: Delivering translated documents and providing simultaneous translations for UN Women Indonesia events throughout the assignment period. Negotiating and agreeing on the expected number of days necessary for specific assignments with the supervisor. Ensuring that each assignment is considered complete only after receiving supervisor approval. Payments will be made subject to the approval of deliverables.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires the following qualifications:
  • Education and Certification: Completion of secondary education is required. A bachelor's degree in Indonesian studies, English literature, gender and women's studies, or a related field is an asset.
  • Experience: A minimum of 6 years of professional experience in providing translation services from English to Bahasa Indonesia and vice versa for those with secondary education, and at least 3 years for those with a bachelor's degree. Experience in providing simultaneous interpretation during events and meetings is required. Familiarity with gender equality and justice system terminologies in Indonesia is advantageous. Experience providing translation and interpretation services to UN and international organizations is also a plus.

Educational Background:
Candidates must have completed secondary education as a minimum requirement. A bachelor's degree in fields such as Indonesian studies, English literature, gender and women's studies, or a related area is considered an asset and may enhance the candidate's suitability for the role.

Experience:
The position requires a significant level of experience, specifically a minimum of 6 years for candidates with only secondary education and at least 3 years for those with a bachelor's degree. This experience should be in providing translation services from English to Bahasa Indonesia and vice versa, as well as in providing simultaneous interpretation during various events and meetings. Familiarity with gender equality concepts and terminologies in Indonesia will be beneficial, and prior experience working with UN or international organizations is preferred.

Languages:
Fluency in both English and Bahasa Indonesia is mandatory for this position. The ability to communicate effectively in both languages is essential for the successful execution of translation and interpretation tasks. Additional language skills may be considered an advantage but are not explicitly required.

Additional Notes:
This consultancy is home-based, but the consultant may be required to work on-site in Jakarta or other locations as needed for interpretation services during events. The contract duration is from 2026 to 2029, and the consultant will be compensated based on the approval of deliverables.
