Job Overview: The UN Associate Data Specialist position is integral to the UN Resident Coordinator's Office (RCO) in Libreville, Gabon. The role focuses on enhancing data management and analytics capabilities to support evidence-based decision-making across development, humanitarian, and peace initiatives. The specialist will collaborate with various stakeholders, including data engineers, scientists, and external partners, to develop and implement data systems and analytics that improve statistical efficiency and quality. This position requires a strong understanding of data engineering, data science, and the ability to communicate complex data insights effectively to management and stakeholders. The specialist will also contribute to building capacity within the UN and among national counterparts through training and workshops.
Duties and Responsibilities: The incumbent will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including:
Developing and implementing databases and data collection systems;
Identifying and analyzing trends in data;
Maintaining and quality-assuring databases;
Creating reports and dashboards to summarize findings;
Documenting methodologies and establishing standards;
Drafting inputs for various documents;
Contributing to monitoring and analyzing model performance;
Designing internal process improvements;
Implementing solutions for data-related technical issues; 1
Collaborating with data engineers and scientists; 1
Assisting in data collection and preliminary analysis; 1
Contributing to the design of data science products; 1
Serving as a resource and mentor on data analytics; 1
Performing other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess strong analytical skills, the ability to work collaboratively, and a deep understanding of sustainable development theories and practices. They should demonstrate proficiency in data collection and analysis, as well as the ability to communicate findings effectively. The role requires a commitment to gender equality and the ability to work under pressure while maintaining professionalism.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in fields such as computer science, data science, analytics, statistics, applied mathematics, information management, or a related quantitative field is required. A Bachelor's degree combined with relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of a Master's degree.
Experience: A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in data analytics or a related area is required. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions and perform quality assurance of data analysis outputs. Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or R is desirable, as is experience in data storytelling.
Languages: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, proficiency in both languages is required, with a minimum level of II in reading, writing, listening, and speaking according to the UN Language Framework.
Additional Notes: This is a fixed-term position for an initial period of one year, subject to availability of funds and budgetary approval. The position is open to nationals of Gabon, and candidates must be recruited within the country or commuting distance of the office.
