Job Overview:
The Chief Development Officer (CDO) will play a pivotal role in shaping the fundraising, marketing, and donor engagement strategies of Human Rights Watch. This position is critical at a time when HRW is looking to deepen its impact and expand its reach. The CDO will be responsible for developing and implementing ambitious fundraising strategies that align with HRW's mission to combat human rights abuses globally. The role requires a visionary leader who can inspire staff, volunteers, and donors, and who is committed to HRW's mission. The CDO will report directly to the director" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Executive Director and will be a key member of the Executive Committee, leading a team of approximately 110 staff members across various fundraising and outreach functions. The CDO will also engage with the Board of Directors and other stakeholders to enhance HRW's fundraising capabilities and ensure the organization's long-term sustainability.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Shape the organization's overall strategy and multi-year financial planning in collaboration with the Executive Committee and Finance team.
  • Develop and implement a multi-year development and fundraising strategy that inspires donors and partners.
  • Provide strategic direction for all fundraising and outreach activities, including leadership gifts, foundations, and marketing.
  • Cultivate relationships with donors and prospects to grow HRW's base of support.
  • Set and monitor fundraising objectives, adjusting strategies as needed.
  • Create compelling funding proposals to engage top-tier donors.
  • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the Development & Outreach Team.
  • Determine investments in development and set budgets to maximize revenue.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure alignment with organizational priorities. 1
  • Support the fundraising efforts of the Executive Director and senior leadership. 1
  • Engage and steward the Board of Directors effectively. 1
  • Lead and mentor a high-performing team, fostering a positive work environment. 1
  • Solicit diverse perspectives and advance equity and inclusion. 1
  • Perform other related tasks as required.

Required Qualifications:
  • At least 12 to 15 years of fundraising experience, including 5 years in a senior role.
  • A strong commitment to HRW's mission and the ability to communicate it effectively.
  • Proven experience in leading and motivating fundraising teams in a complex organization.
  • Expertise in major gift fundraising, marketing, and planned giving.
  • A successful track record of cultivating and closing transformational gifts.
  • Ability to communicate HRW's mission to diverse audiences.
  • Global perspective on philanthropy and cultural competency.
  • Ability to foster an inclusive team culture.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills in English; proficiency in additional languages is a plus. 1
  • A data-driven approach to fundraising strategy development and implementation. 1
  • Strong analytical, strategic planning, and problem-solving skills.

Educational Background:
A bachelor's degree is required, with a preference for candidates holding advanced degrees in relevant fields such as nonprofit management, business administration, or public policy. Educational qualifications should reflect a strong foundation in fundraising principles, organizational management, and human rights advocacy.

Experience:
Candidates should possess a minimum of 12 to 15 years of relevant experience in fundraising, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role. Experience in a global organization and a proven ability to manage complex fundraising operations are essential. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated history of achieving ambitious fundraising goals and leading high-performing teams.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, with proficiency in additional languages considered a valuable asset. The ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences across different cultures is crucial for this role.

Additional Notes:
This position is full-time and preferably based in HRW's New York office, although other HRW offices may be considered. The role requires flexibility to accommodate colleagues across multiple time zones and involves domestic and international travel approximately 25-40% of the time. The estimated compensation for this position in the United States ranges from $350,000 to $400,000, with variations based on local market conditions in other locations.
