Intern - Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) Regional Evidence for Migration Analysis and Policy (REMAP)

Job Overview:
The intern will work under the overall supervision of the Global DTM Coordinator and the direct supervision of the Senior Programme Manager of the DTM REMAP project based in Berlin, Germany. The primary function of this position is to support the smooth implementation of ongoing work related to the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) Regional Evidence for Migration Analysis and Policy (REMAP) project. This project was developed in response to the critical need for collecting and analyzing information on protracted displacement and human mobility in, to, and from several countries including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. The intern will assist in researching and drafting dashboards, preparing data for flash information sheets, papers, and reports that describe and analyze human mobility of nationals from these countries. The intern will also compile, analyze, and visualize human mobility data for DTM REMAP reporting purposes, ensuring that the information management systems adhere to IOM Data Protection Policy and ITC Policies and Standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks including: assisting in the research and drafting of dashboards; preparing data for flash information sheets, papers, and reports; compiling and analyzing human mobility data; supporting the development and implementation of supplementary systems for quality assurance; analyzing new assignments; developing scripts and tests to validate data; handling change requests; providing solutions to data sourcing issues; managing dataset addition processes; ensuring timely delivery of content; developing data queries for internal use; and ensuring compliance with IOM Data Protection Policy and ITC Policies and Standards. The intern may also perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Analytics, or a related field, with at least two years of relevant professional experience. Experience in compiling, collecting, and analyzing data from various sources, both structured and unstructured, is essential. Familiarity with Natural Language Processing and Sentiment Analysis is advantageous. Good data visualization skills in HTML5 or JavaScript environments, as well as strong SQL development skills, are required. Proficiency in Python 3 or another multi-purpose programming language is preferred. Candidates should be capable of transforming ideas into algorithms and programming code/apps and should have a keen interest in spatio-temporal data and Big Data technologies.

Educational Background:
Candidates should be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated within the last 12 months. Accredited universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have experience in data compilation, collection, and analysis from various sources. Experience with Natural Language Processing and Sentiment Analysis is considered an advantage. The intern should have a strong background in data visualization and programming, particularly in environments such as HTML5, JavaScript, AngularJS, NodeJS, or D3.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position, both oral and written. Working knowledge of Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Russian, and Uzbek languages, as well as another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, or Spanish), is advantageous. The proficiency of required languages will be evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Additional Notes:
The internship program aims to attract talented students and graduates with a specific interest in IOM's programs and activities. Candidates must be between 20 and 36 years of age and may be sponsored by governmental or non-governmental institutions. IOM provides a small monthly stipend to help offset costs, and candidates should consider the cost of living in Berlin prior to applying.
