Job Overview:
The Media and Communications Assistant will work under the overall supervision of the Chief of Mission (CoM) in Suva, Fiji, and will directly report to the Head of Programme Support Unit (PSU). This role involves collaboration with Pacific programme teams and the Media and Communication Unit (MCU) in the Regional Office (RO) in Bangkok. The primary function of this position is to assist in the implementation of internal and external communication and media-related activities for IOM’s operations in the Pacific sub-region, particularly focusing on the South Pacific. The assistant will support media and communications activities by preparing and disseminating approved communication materials and visibility products across the Pacific sub-region, working closely with IOM Missions in the region. The role requires general assistance in implementing media and communication-related activities, including preparing communication products such as success stories, human interest pieces, project briefs, social media content, and visibility materials that highlight outcomes and lessons learned from IOM projects. The assistant will also contribute to outreach activities and support the organization of media and communications coverage for various events, including meetings, workshops, and training sessions.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Media and Communications Assistant will have a variety of duties and responsibilities, including:
  • Assisting in the preparation and dissemination of communication products and visibility materials across IOM platforms, ensuring adherence to IOM and donor branding guidelines.
  • Drafting and formatting routine messaging and storytelling materials for review, contributing to IOM’s outreach activities.
  • Compiling communication inputs and identifying approved content for communication materials to support project teams.
  • Organizing media and communications coverage for meetings, workshops, and training sessions, ensuring effective communication of IOM’s work.
  • Responding to general information requests and inquiries related to media and communications.
  • Setting up and maintaining files and records related to communication activities.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned by supervisors.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a high school diploma with three years of relevant experience, or a Bachelor’s degree in communications, media, journalism, development studies, environmental science, international relations, or a related field from an accredited academic institution with one year of relevant experience. Accredited universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database. Additionally, candidates should have experience in media and communication, including preparing content such as stories, social media posts, or simple visibility materials. Experience providing administrative or communications support is desirable, and prior work experience with international humanitarian organizations or government institutions in a multicultural setting is an advantage.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a high school diploma with three years of relevant experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as communications, media, journalism, development studies, environmental science, or international relations from an accredited institution. The degree must be from a recognized university listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database, ensuring that candidates have a solid academic foundation to support their work in media and communications.

Experience:
The level of experience needed for this position includes at least three years of relevant experience for candidates with a high school diploma or one year of relevant experience for those with a Bachelor’s degree. Candidates should have experience in media and communication, particularly in preparing content such as stories, social media posts, or visibility materials. Experience providing administrative or communications support is desirable, and prior work experience with international humanitarian organizations or government institutions in a multicultural setting is considered an advantage, as it demonstrates the ability to work effectively in diverse environments.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position, both oral and written. All IOM staff members are required to be fluent in one of the IOM's official languages, which include English, French, and Spanish. For this role, proficiency in English will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments. Additionally, a working knowledge of a Pacific language is considered an asset, as it may enhance communication with local communities and stakeholders.
