The Nairobi Convention, part of this framework, serves as the intergovernmental platform for Contracting Parties to collaborate on the protection and sustainable management of the marine and coastal environment. UNEP acts as the Secretariat for the Nairobi Convention, facilitating cooperation among its members and supporting environmental initiatives.

Job Overview:
The Senior Coordination Officer will be responsible for leading the administration of the Nairobi Convention and its Secretariat. This role involves developing, implementing, and evaluating programs and projects under the Convention, directing subordinates in program development, and ensuring effective monitoring and assessment. The incumbent will prepare and convene meetings of Contracting Parties, transmit notifications and reports, and coordinate cooperative activities agreed upon by the Parties. The position requires liaising with various stakeholders, including governments, international organizations, and the donor community, to support UNEP's Regional Seas Programme and implement fundraising strategies. The officer will also ensure gender mainstreaming in all actions and provide analytical support for the development of an integrated information and knowledge management strategy within the Nairobi Convention area.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties of the Senior Coordination Officer include leading the administration of the Nairobi Convention and its Secretariat, developing and implementing assigned programs/projects, directing subordinate staff, preparing and convening meetings of Contracting Parties, transmitting notifications and reports, coordinating cooperative activities, managing outreach activities, and ensuring effective financial management. The officer will also supervise the preparation of technical publications, manage a Clearing House Mechanism for information, coordinate with focal points from Contracting Parties, and provide substantive support for meetings and conferences. Additionally, the officer will lead field missions, guide external consultants, and ensure the effective utilization and development of staff.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in environmental management, law" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">environmental law, biology, or natural sciences. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Successful completion of degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics, or data science is desirable. Candidates should demonstrate strong leadership, negotiation, and analytical skills, as well as the ability to work collaboratively and effectively manage teams.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in environmental management, environmental law, biology, or natural sciences is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics, or data science programs is desirable, indicating a strong foundation in data-driven decision-making and analysis.

Experience:
A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible professional experience in the planning, implementation, and management of marine and coastal programs, policies, and initiatives at the national, regional, or international level is required. At least five years of experience in intergovernmental processes, including supporting negotiations and conferences, is essential. Additionally, candidates should have a minimum of five years' experience managing large programs and projects related to the marine environment and at least three years' experience in resource mobilization. Experience in data analytics or related areas is desirable, showcasing the ability to leverage data for effective program management.

Languages:
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, proficiency in English is required at UN Level II for reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Knowledge of French is an asset, as it may enhance communication with stakeholders and partners in the region.

Additional Notes:
The appointment for this position is limited to the United Nations Environment Programme and is for an initial period of one year, subject to extension based on the continued existence of the mandate and availability of funding. The position is classified as fixed-term appointment limited (FTA-limited). Candidates selected for this position will retain their current appointment status if they meet the definition of 'internal candidate' as per staff rule 4.1
