Job Overview:
The Associate Interpreter will play a crucial role in facilitating communication within the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine. This position requires the incumbent to provide accurate translation and simultaneous interpretation services from English to Russian or Ukrainian and vice versa. The role is vital in ensuring that all communications are clear and effective, particularly in sensitive contexts involving victims and witnesses of human rights violations. The Associate Interpreter will also be expected to maintain confidentiality and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security of information, participate in field missions, and contribute to data collection and analysis. The position demands a strong understanding of gender-sensitive language and the ability to document issues related to sexual and gender-based violence. The incumbent will also be involved in drafting insights and reports using data visualization methods to support decision-making and reporting processes.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Associate Interpreter will be responsible for the following duties:

• Provide accurate translation and simultaneous interpretation from English to Russian or Ukrainian and vice versa, ensuring clarity and precision in communication.
• Integrate a gender perspective in all interpretations, particularly in relation to sensitive topics such as sexual and gender-based violence.
• Maintain strict confidentiality and security of all information encountered during the course of work.
• Participate in field missions, interpreting interviews with victims, witnesses, and sources to gather firsthand accounts of human rights violations.
• Contribute to the collection and analysis of data, identifying trends or patterns relevant to the Commission's work.
• Prepare draft insights and reports using data visualization methods, including graphs, charts, and tables, to aid in data-driven planning and decision-making.
• Perform other related duties as required by the Coordinator of the Secretariat.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts, and approaches relevant to translation and interpretation. The ability to identify and analyze issues, conduct independent research, and apply judgment in various contexts is essential. Candidates should demonstrate professionalism, efficiency, and a commitment to meeting deadlines. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are required, along with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. The role also requires a commitment to incorporating gender perspectives in all areas of work and ensuring equal participation of women and men.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree in translation, interpretation, languages, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Candidates should have a strong academic background that supports their ability to perform the duties of the position effectively.

Experience:
A minimum of 2 years of work experience in translation and/or interpretation is required, including experience gained through academic research work. Of the 2 years, at least one year of experience within the United Nations Common Systems is desirable. Experience in providing translation or interpretation during investigations or on human rights-related subjects is also considered an asset.

Languages:
English is required at UN Level III for reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Russian and Ukrainian are also required at UN Level III for all language skills. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in these languages according to the UN Language Framework, ensuring effective communication in a multilingual environment.

This position is temporarily available until 31 December 2026, with the possibility of extension, subject to the availability of funds and/or extension of the mandate.
