Job Overview:

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for conducting thorough research and analysis on various aspects of population dynamics, including ageing and migration trends within the Arab region. Key responsibilities include: - Researching migration-related laws and policies in Arab countries and summarizing findings for the migration database. - Assisting in the preparation of reports and policy briefs that address demographic and socioeconomic issues. - Gathering and analyzing data on population growth, fertility rates, ageing, and migration patterns. - Contributing to the formulation of evidence-based policy recommendations aimed at improving national strategies on ageing. - Supporting technical assistance initiatives that strengthen national policies. - Organizing capacity-building workshops, training sessions, and high-level meetings. - Preparing background materials, presentations, and documentation for meetings. - Facilitating coordination with government representatives, experts, and development partners on initiatives related to population and ageing.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for this internship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
  • Enrollment in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), or in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level), or have graduated with a university degree.
  • Proficiency in standard software applications is required.
  • A demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and a commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.
  • Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, showing tolerance and understanding of differing opinions.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be currently enrolled in a graduate program or in the final year of their undergraduate studies. A degree in social sciences, international relations, public policy, or a related field is preferred, as it aligns with the focus areas of the internship.

Experience:
No prior work experience is required for this internship position. However, a strong interest in population issues, migration, and demographic studies is essential. The internship is an excellent opportunity for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in a UN environment.

Languages:
Fluency in English and French is required, as these are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of Arabic is also beneficial, as it is a working language of ESCWA. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in at least one of these languages, with fluency being defined as a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas: speaking, reading, writing, and understanding.

Additional Notes:
This internship is hybrid, allowing for flexible working arrangements, contingent upon written agreement by the receiving entity. Interns must commit to at least two months of full-time work and complete their internship within a six-month period. It is important to note that interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations, and all costs related to travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns or their sponsoring institutions. Additionally, applicants must provide proof of valid medical insurance coverage for the duration of the internship and submit a medical certificate of good health prior to starting. The United Nations does not charge any fees during the recruitment process.
