Job Overview:
The position of UNESCO Research Scientist in Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics involves a multifaceted role that encompasses scientific research, education, and outreach. The incumbent will work under the guidance of the Division Senior Coordinator and the Head of the Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics Section. The primary responsibilities include initiating and coordinating front-line research projects, mentoring post-doctoral fellows and students, and teaching courses at ICTP and other venues. The role also requires participation in the selection of candidates for ICTP programs and activities, ensuring that the research aligns with the section's objectives. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute significantly to the scientific community through research, education, and collaboration with scientists from developing countries.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the UNESCO Research Scientist include:
  • Conducting front-line research in condensed matter and statistical physics, identifying and developing research projects that align with the section's goals.
  • Participating in the hiring process for post-doctoral fellows and providing mentorship to them, as well as to associates, visitors, and fellows involved in research projects.
  • Reporting research findings at major international conferences and meetings.
  • Teaching in the Diploma program and supervising Diploma student theses, as well as providing scientific supervision to M.Sc. and Ph.D. students.
  • Participating in the selection process for Diploma, M.Sc., and Ph.D. students as required by ICTP programs.
  • Establishing collaborations with scientists from developing countries to identify their scientific needs and formulating recommendations for ICTP programs.
  • Organizing meetings and activities related to the research field, including external activities predominantly in developing countries.
  • Applying for and managing individual research grants and participating in the programs of ICTP Partner Institutes.

Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for this position include an advanced university degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in Physics or a related discipline. Candidates must have at least four years of relevant professional experience in condensed matter and/or statistical physics or a related field, with a preference for at least two years of experience at the international level. Additionally, candidates should have internationally recognized research achievements in the physics of quantum many-body systems, quantum information processing, quantum technologies, or related fields. Experience in teaching and mentoring undergraduate or postgraduate students is also essential.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree, specifically a Ph.D. or equivalent, in Physics or a closely related discipline. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complex scientific concepts and methodologies required for the role.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of four years of relevant professional experience in the fields of condensed matter and/or statistical physics. Of this experience, at least two years should ideally be at the international level, demonstrating the candidate's ability to engage with a global scientific community. The candidate should also have a track record of internationally recognized research achievements, particularly in areas such as quantum many-body systems and quantum technologies.

Languages:
Excellent knowledge of English, both spoken and written, is mandatory for this position. Additionally, knowledge of another official UNESCO language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is considered desirable and may enhance the candidate's profile.
