Japan has become one of UN Women’s top donors, and the UN Women Japan Liaison Office (JLO) was established in Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo in 2015 to strengthen its focus on gender equality and development assistance.

Job Overview:
The Coordination and Communication Associate will work under the direct supervision of the Partnership Specialist at the UN Women Japan Liaison Office. This role involves coordinating various initiatives, particularly those related to youth engagement and private sector partnerships. The associate will serve as a communication focal point for private sector members of the Unstereotype Japan chapter and will support the onboarding of new private sector companies into UN Women’s advocacy initiatives. The position also requires the translation and compilation of knowledge products on Women, Peace and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Security (WPS) into Japanese, as well as the development of briefing materials, presentations, and press releases. The associate will play a crucial role in enhancing the JLO’s online presence and supporting the migration of the website to a new template. This position is integral to the overall mission of UN Women in Japan, contributing to the strategic goals outlined in the UN Women Strategic Plan 2026-2029.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Coordination and Communication Associate include:
  • Coordinating the translation of UN Women highlights for 2025-26, working with translation and printing companies, and liaising with internal stakeholders.
  • Coordinating youth engagement initiatives stemming from partnerships with private sector actors.
  • Acting as the communication focal point for private sector members of the Unstereotype Japan chapter until a Communication Specialist is onboarded.
  • Supporting the research and onboarding of private sector companies to join UN Women’s advocacy initiatives, including the Unstereotype Alliance.
  • Assisting in the translation and compilation of knowledge products related to Women, Peace and Security in Japanese.
  • Providing inputs and support for organizing executive missions.
  • Developing briefing materials, presentations, advocacy materials, and press releases, and coordinating their dissemination through effective channels.
  • Supporting the JLO’s web and online presence, including assisting with the migration of the website to a new template.
  • Assisting the Director in communication and advocacy activities. 1
  • Performing any other related tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires a strong set of qualifications, including:
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, in Japanese and English.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Experience in coordinating projects and working with diverse stakeholders, particularly in the private sector.
  • Familiarity with gender equality issues and UN Women’s mission.
  • Proficiency in using digital communication tools and platforms.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating adaptability and flexibility in a dynamic environment.

Educational Background:
Candidates should possess a bachelor’s degree in communications, social sciences, international relations, or a related field. A master’s degree in a relevant area would be an advantage. Educational qualifications should reflect a strong understanding of gender issues and the role of communication in advocacy.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have at least 2-3 years of relevant experience in communications, project coordination, or a related field. Experience working with international organizations, particularly in the context of gender equality and women's empowerment, is highly desirable. Familiarity with the UN system and its operations would be beneficial.

Languages:
Fluency in Japanese is mandatory, and proficiency in English is also required. Knowledge of additional languages would be considered an asset, particularly languages relevant to the local context or UN operations.

Additional Notes:
The duration of the assignment is indicated above, with the possibility of extension based on funding availability, operational necessity, and satisfactory performance. There is no expectation of renewal of the assignment. Travel to the duty station may be applicable, and a Settling-In-Grant will be provided if the duty station is not within commuting distance from the place of recruitment. The Volunteer Living Allowance is provided monthly to cover housing, utilities, and normal living expenses. Life, health, and permanent disability insurance are included, along with final repatriation if applicable. In non-family duty stations classified as hardship categories D or E, a Well-Being Differential (WBD) will be provided monthly.
