Job Overview:
As a Materials Engineer specializing in Polymers and Composites at CERN, you will be an integral part of the Polymer Laboratory within the Superconducting Magnet Technology section. Your primary responsibility will be to develop and qualify advanced polymer and composite materials that are essential for the operation of CERN's accelerator systems. This role requires a strong focus on materials that can withstand cryogenic temperatures, high-voltage conditions, and radiation exposure. You will be expected to contribute to the design, validation, and implementation of innovative materials, ensuring they meet the rigorous standards required for use in CERN's complex scientific environments. Your work will involve leading research and design projects, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and identifying new material technologies and processing techniques to enhance CERN's capabilities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop and qualify novel polymer and composite materials specifically for superconducting magnets and accelerator technologies, with a focus on their performance in cryogenic, high-voltage, and radiation environments.
  • Design and validate manufacturing and processing techniques for superconducting magnet insulation systems, including resin transfer processes, bonding technologies, composite fabrication, and additive manufacturing.
  • Lead research and design projects within the Polymer Laboratory, addressing the evolving needs of CERN's accelerator complex and experimental facilities.
  • Contribute to laboratory developments by identifying new material technologies and processing techniques, establishing new experimental capabilities, and ensuring that the laboratory remains at the forefront of material science.
  • Collaborate with other departments and stakeholders to ensure that material solutions meet the technical requirements of various projects.
  • Conduct material characterization using mechanical, thermal, and chemical analyses to assess the performance and reliability of developed materials.
  • Stay updated on advancements in material science and engineering, particularly in relation to superconducting magnets and accelerator technologies.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master's Degree or PhD in material engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or a related field. Additionally, candidates should have a strong background in polymer and composite materials engineering, including experience in developing manufacturing processes for fibre-reinforced composites. Familiarity with material characterization techniques, such as mechanical, thermal, or chemical analyses, is essential. Experience in coordinating or leading multidisciplinary technical and research activities is also required. Knowledge of superconducting magnet construction and technologies, as well as materials suitable for cryogenic, high-voltage, or radiation environments, would be advantageous.

Educational Background:
A Master's Degree or PhD in material engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or a closely related field is required for this position. Candidates with equivalent relevant experience may also be considered. The educational background should include a strong emphasis on materials science, particularly in the context of polymers and composites.

Experience:
Candidates should have substantial experience in polymer and composite materials engineering, particularly in the development of manufacturing processes for fibre-reinforced composites. Experience in material characterization techniques is crucial, as is the ability to coordinate or lead multidisciplinary technical and research activities involving multiple stakeholders. Familiarity with superconducting magnet technologies and materials for extreme environments is a plus.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, and candidates should demonstrate a commitment to learning French. Proficiency in additional languages would be considered an asset, enhancing communication within the diverse international environment at CERN.

Additional Notes:
This position is offered as a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The role requires a commitment to a 40-hour work week, with hybrid work flexibility. The position may involve work in radiation areas, underground installations, and may require night, weekend, and holiday shifts as necessary. Selected candidates must obtain medical clearance due to occupational health risks associated with the position. The job grade is 6-7, and the reference for this position is TE-MSC-SMT-2026-172-LD.
