Job Overview: The Driver position at WHO involves providing reliable and secure driving services for authorized personnel, which includes transporting staff for field visits and handling the delivery and collection of important documents and items. The role requires the incumbent to meet official personnel and visitors at the airport, assist with immigration and customs formalities, and ensure that all necessary documents and supplies for the vehicle are available. The driver is also responsible for logging official trips, maintaining the vehicle, and ensuring compliance with traffic regulations. This position is critical in supporting the operational needs of the WHO office in Papua New Guinea, ensuring that staff can travel safely and efficiently to fulfill their duties.
Duties and Responsibilities: The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
Driving office vehicles for the transport of authorized personnel, including for field visits, and the delivery and collection of mail, documents, and other items.
Meeting official personnel and visitors at the airport and facilitating immigration and customs formalities as required.
Checking for the availability of all required documents and supplies for the assigned vehicle, including vehicle insurance, vehicle logs, office directory, first aid kit, and necessary spare parts.
Logging official trips, daily mileage, and gas/electricity consumption.
Undertaking day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle through timely minor repairs, oil changes, checking tires and brakes, car washing, and making arrangements for major repairs.
Keeping the driving license valid and conforming to traffic codes to meet all driving regulations and safety requirements.
Taking appropriate precautions for the security of the vehicle and its contents when left unattended.
Ensuring that GPS and tracking devices are operational and checking them daily for functionality.
Reporting any incidents or accidents as per the outlined rules and regulations. 1
Performing messenger duties such as handling deliveries, collecting and loading/unloading mail, documents, and goods or supplies.
Required Qualifications: The position requires the following qualifications:
Education: Essential - Secondary, technical, or commercial school education and a valid driving license. Desirable - Basic mechanics' certificate and first aid training.
Experience: Essential - A minimum of one year of work experience as a driver with a safe driving record. Desirable - Experience in driving within WHO or another United Nations agency would be an asset.
Skills: Knowledge of local traffic regulations and topography of the country, understanding of protocol and organizational security standards for drivers, basic mechanical knowledge and skills in operating and maintaining different types of vehicles, and the ability to interact positively and tactfully with diverse clients.
Ability to write official reports of incidents and read and understand instructions in the working language.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a secondary education level, with technical or commercial schooling being essential. A valid driving license is also mandatory. Additional desirable qualifications include a basic mechanics' certificate and first aid training, which would enhance the candidate's ability to perform the job effectively.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of one year of work experience as a driver, demonstrating a safe driving record. Experience in driving for WHO or another United Nations agency is considered an asset and would be beneficial for understanding the specific requirements and protocols associated with the role.
Languages: The essential language requirement for this position is intermediate knowledge of English. This proficiency is necessary for effective communication and understanding of instructions. Additional Notes: The position offers an attractive remuneration package, with an annual net base salary starting at PGK 30,655, subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance. Employees are entitled to 30 days of annual leave. The recruitment process is subject to WHO Staff Regulations and Rules, and the Director-General retains discretion over appointments.
