Job Overview: The Knowledge Management Officer (Forest Monitoring) plays a crucial role within the Forest Monitoring and Data Platforms Team (NFOMD) of the Forestry Division (NFO) at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy. This position is focused on knowledge management, programmatic activities, advocacy, and outreach related to forest monitoring. The officer will be responsible for collecting, analyzing, and disseminating knowledge and information that supports various programs, projects, products, and services. The role involves close collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to ensure effective communication and outreach efforts. The officer will also contribute to the development of training tools and materials, organize workshops and seminars, and support the preparation of knowledge products and events. The position requires a proactive approach to enhancing the visibility and outreach of key departmental products and ensuring adherence to corporate guidance and quality standards.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Knowledge Management Officer will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including:
Collecting and analyzing relevant technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional, and technology-related information to support the delivery of program projects, products, and services.
Providing technical input to plans and reports, and editing/revising technical/scientific documents.
Participating in the development of improved work methods, tools, and systems.
Updating databases and web pages in close consultation with the Office of Communications (OCC).
Collaborating on the development of training tools and materials and contributing to the organization of workshops and seminars.
Supporting the organization, delivery, and follow-up of meetings, consultations, and conferences, including the development of required materials.
Drafting, editing, and making available promotional videos and webcasts, and documenting international events.
Drafting project publications, posters, brochures, and other printed materials to enhance visibility and outreach.
Designing and implementing knowledge management and outreach strategies and activities for the NFOMD Team. 1
Coordinating the preparation of knowledge products and events, and supervising consultants as needed. 1
Liaising with internal and external stakeholders to ensure coordination of outreach and promotion efforts. 1
Implementing and regularly updating knowledge management and outreach work plans, and reporting on implementation and results.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in public relations, communication, social science, journalism, political science, or a related field. Additionally, a minimum of three years of relevant experience in communication, graphic design for technical publications, and the production of high-resolution videos for international events is required. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in English (level C) and intermediate knowledge of another official FAO language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) (level B).
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in a relevant field such as public relations, communication, social science, journalism, or political science. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of communication and outreach in the context of forest monitoring and management.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of three years of relevant experience in communication and outreach, particularly in the context of forest monitoring. Experience in graphic design for the preparation of technical publications, user interfaces, and visual materials is essential. Additionally, candidates should have experience in organizing high-level events, technical workshops, seminars, and press conferences, as well as working with multi-partner projects and multidisciplinary teams.
Languages: A working knowledge of English at proficiency level C is mandatory, along with intermediate knowledge (level B) of another official FAO language, which could be Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
