Job Overview:
The Senior Communications Associate plays a crucial role in the UNHCR's communication strategy, working under the supervision of a Communication Officer or senior management. This position requires a proactive approach to managing communications activities, including media relations, social media engagement, and content production. The incumbent will work independently on regular assignments while maintaining frequent contact with various stakeholders, including media, NGOs, and UN agencies. The role involves supporting the execution of communications strategies, monitoring news trends, and developing impactful content that resonates with target audiences. The Senior Communications Associate will also assist in advocacy efforts, public outreach campaigns, and digital fundraising initiatives, ensuring that UNHCR's messaging is effectively communicated and reaches a wide audience. The position demands a strong understanding of the media landscape and the ability to adapt global content for local audiences, enhancing visibility and engagement.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Support the implementation of communications strategies for various countries and special projects within the Area of Responsibility (AoR).
  • Identify thematic priorities and target audiences to align with UNHCR's global communications objectives.
  • Monitor news and popular trends to integrate UNHCR's messaging into ongoing conversations.
  • Forge strategic partnerships with individuals and organizations to enhance the production and promotion of UNHCR content.
  • Develop authoritative content, including press releases, interviews, and multimedia storytelling, to lead the narrative on forced displacement.
  • Ensure maximum impact of created content by developing distribution strategies and boosting visibility on UNHCR channels.
  • Monitor communications projects and adjust strategies as necessary.
  • Assist in the preparation and dissemination of professional media materials, ensuring high-quality standards.
  • Maintain and upgrade communications skills, staying informed about emerging platforms and tools. 1
  • Support the implementation of campaigns and events that align with UNHCR's strategic objectives. 1
  • Identify and manage risks while seizing opportunities impacting communications objectives. 1
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Required Qualifications:
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency in MS Office applications.
  • Strong drafting and editing skills.
  • Experience in implementing communications strategies is desirable.
  • Professional writing and editing skills are essential.
  • Experience in advocacy campaigns is a plus.
  • Knowledge of journalism, media contacts, and video production for digital platforms is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with social media management and content dissemination is important.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a High School Diploma with 4 years of relevant experience, or a Bachelor's degree or higher with 2 years of relevant work experience. A background in Journalism, Social Sciences, Humanities, or related fields is preferred. Certificates and licenses in these areas are essential for the role.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience for candidates with a High School Diploma, or 2 years of relevant experience for those with a Bachelor's degree or higher. Experience in communications, media relations, and advocacy campaigns is highly desirable, along with a proven track record of producing high-quality content and managing communications strategies effectively.

Languages:
Knowledge of English and the UN working language of the duty station (French) is mandatory. For General Service jobs, proficiency in English and/or the UN working language is required. Additional language skills are considered an asset, particularly in the context of local engagement and outreach.
