Job Overview:
The Geospatial Analytics & Mapping Intern will play a crucial role in supporting Mercy Corps' geospatial operations and enhancing the organization's capacity to utilize geospatial technologies effectively. This internship will provide the intern with hands-on experience in applied GIS and Remote Sensing within humanitarian contexts, focusing on the specific needs of Mercy Corps teams and programs. The intern will engage in various projects that involve the production of geospatial workflows in a cloud environment, the development of AI-supported geospatial tools, and the support of internal capacity building initiatives. The internship is designed to foster learning and skill development in geospatial analysis, mapping, and the use of advanced technologies to support humanitarian efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a range of tasks that support the objectives of the T4D Data Science team. Key responsibilities include:
  • Collaborating with the T4D data science team to implement a pilot of ArcGIS Enterprise across selected pilot countries, which involves organizing and setting up the instance, populating data, and developing training materials.
  • Supporting the organization’s Ebola response efforts by creating maps, visualizations, and analyses to assist the response team.
  • Conducting ad-hoc analyses and producing map products as requested by T4D, other HQ teams, and country teams, utilizing both desktop software (e.g., QGIS, ArcGIS) and programmatic workflows (Python, Google Earth Engine).
  • Engaging in data sourcing, cleaning, and preparation for analysis.
  • Calculating, mapping, and interpreting remote sensing indices to aid in design" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">program design and adaptation.
  • Assisting in the implementation of geospatial foundational models in program use cases.
  • Developing AI-enabled workflows to automate periodic geospatial analyses and map production.
  • Supporting teams in creating maps for reports or monitoring purposes.
  • Researching and reporting on new geospatial tools, resources, and data sources, and contributing to an inventory of geospatial tools and analyses across the organization. 1
  • Productionizing geospatial analyses using cloud platforms.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for this internship should possess a university degree in progress or recently completed (within the last year) in a relevant discipline such as GIS, Geography, Remote Sensing/Earth Observation, Geoinformatics, Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, or related fields. Applicants must be based in the United States. A portfolio or GitHub link showcasing relevant geospatial work is highly encouraged. Candidates should have educational experience with geospatial analysis using GIS software like QGIS or ArcGIS, and familiarity with geospatial programming in Python and/or Google Earth Engine. Knowledge of AI tools, particularly for geospatial workflows, is also beneficial. Strong communication skills, especially the ability to convey complex technical topics to non-technical audiences, are essential. Additional experience in cloud development, full-stack development, and training material development will be considered strong assets.
