Job Overview: The consultancy position is aimed at providing critical support to the implementation of the ECA's programme in West Africa. The consultant will be responsible for strengthening economic diversification and resilience through the development of value chains, ensuring macroeconomic stability, and enhancing intra-African trade. The role involves preparing assessments of regional and national value chains, collecting and analyzing economic data, and formulating policies that address emerging issues in West Africa. The consultant will work under the supervision of the Team Leader on subregional initiatives and will contribute to the overall goals of the ECA in promoting sustainable development in the region.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will undertake several key responsibilities, including:
Preparing assessments of two critical value chains and their associated policy frameworks to promote economic diversification and industrialization in West Africa.
Collecting and analyzing economic data to support policy formulation on pressing issues such as debt management and domestic resource mobilization.
Supporting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) initiatives.
Performing additional tasks as requested by the Director of the Subregional Office. The consultant is expected to deliver comprehensive reports and recommendations based on their findings and analyses.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master’s degree or higher in economics, statistics, international development, or a related field. A minimum of 7 years of relevant working experience in sustainable development, economic research and analysis, macroeconomic modeling, policy formulation, project management, and evaluation is required. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate knowledge of economic principles as they apply to macroeconomics and development programs, as well as experience in value chain analysis and economic diversification strategies.
Educational Background: The educational requirement for this position is a Master’s degree or above in a relevant field such as economics, statistics, or international development. This advanced education is essential for understanding complex economic issues and for conducting high-level analyses necessary for the consultancy.
Experience: The position requires at least 7 years of professional experience in areas related to sustainable development, economic research, macroeconomic analysis, and policy formulation. Candidates should have a proven track record in project management and evaluation, as well as experience in strategic report writing and the application of economic principles in real-world scenarios.
Languages: Fluency in either English or French is mandatory, as these are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. Knowledge of an additional UN language is considered desirable, which may enhance communication and collaboration within the international context of the role.
