Job Overview:
The position of Detector Scientist is integral to the ATLAS Phase-II upgrade project at CERN, specifically during Long Shutdown
  • The role involves working on the all-silicon Inner Tracker (ITk) which consists of multiple silicon strip and hybrid pixel layers designed to enhance the capabilities of particle detection. The successful candidate will be responsible for assembling and testing silicon pixel detector modules, which are crucial for high-energy physics experiments. This position requires a proactive approach to improving production processes, ensuring high throughput levels, and contributing to the parallelization of testing procedures in laboratory settings. The role also involves developing and maintaining software tools to optimize workflows and analyze test data, as well as collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of engineers, physicists, and technicians to integrate detector modules into larger systems. The candidate will present progress and results to both internal teams and the wider project community, making effective communication skills essential.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary duties and responsibilities of the Detector Scientist include:
  • Assembling and testing silicon pixel detector modules for particle physics experiments.
  • Supporting and enhancing production processes to maintain high throughput levels.
  • Contributing to the parallelization of testing procedures in laboratory environments.
  • Developing and maintaining in-house software tools for workflow optimization and test data analysis.
  • Utilizing databases to record, track, and evaluate measurement results.
  • Presenting progress and results to internal teams and the broader project community.
  • Assisting in upgrading laboratory equipment and procedures to meet evolving project requirements.
  • Collaborating closely with engineers, physicists, and technicians in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Contributing to the integration of assembled detector modules into larger sub-systems of the ATLAS ITk Pixel detector.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a professional background in Physics or Electronics (or a related field). Eligibility criteria include being a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State, and having either a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience, or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. Additionally, candidates must not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Master's degree or PhD in Physics, Electronics, or a related field. A strong foundation in the principles of particle physics and detector technology is essential, along with relevant coursework or research experience that demonstrates the candidate's ability to contribute effectively to the role.

Experience:
Candidates should have practical experience with the assembly, testing, and characterization of silicon detector modules or similar systems. Experience with laboratory instrumentation such as probe stations, metrology systems, or optical inspection instruments is highly desirable. The ability to perform quality control measurements and evaluate results with precision is crucial, as is experience in automating laboratory procedures and data acquisition using programming languages like Python. Familiarity with data analysis, database tools, and documentation systems used in detector production or similar environments is also important.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication at CERN. Candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to learning French, which is beneficial for integration into the local community and workplace.

Additional Notes:
This position is fully onsite and requires a commitment of 40 hours per week. The contract duration is initially set for 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months.
