Job Overview:
The National Project Coordinator position is located within the FAO Representation in Tonga, specifically in Nuku’alofa. The role involves program development, coordination, and operational assistance, leveraging knowledge of local conditions, culture, language, and institutions. The coordinator will work closely with government authorities and various institutions to promote FAO's activities and represent the organization at interagency meetings. The position requires a proactive approach to advocacy, data collection, and policy analysis, ensuring that FAO's initiatives align with national priorities and contribute to the overall goal of food security and agricultural development in Tonga. The coordinator will also lead the Programme Unit, oversee project implementation, and engage in resource mobilization efforts to support FAO's mission in the country.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The National Project Coordinator will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including liaising with government authorities and local institutions, promoting FAO's image through advocacy and communication tools, and coordinating the collection and maintenance of agricultural data. The coordinator will participate in producing technical studies and developing frameworks like the Country Programming Framework (CPF) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF). Additionally, the role involves monitoring project implementation, identifying inconsistencies, and proposing corrective measures. The coordinator will also supervise lower-grade personnel, ensure adherence to procedures, and provide training as necessary. Other responsibilities include leading the Programme Unit, formulating resource mobilization strategies, strengthening collaborations with various stakeholders, and offering policy advice on agricultural development.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a university degree from an institution recognized by the International Association of Universities (IAU)/UNESCO in fields such as agriculture, agricultural economics, forestry, fisheries, natural resources, rural development, business administration, management, or international relations. Additionally, candidates should have at least five years of relevant experience in public or private sectors related to programming, planning, and technical cooperation in food and agriculture, as well as project implementation in areas aligned with FAO's activities. A working knowledge of English is mandatory, and candidates must be nationals of Tonga.
Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a university degree from an accredited institution in relevant fields such as agriculture, agricultural economics, forestry, fisheries, natural resources, rural development, business administration, management, or international relations. The degree must be recognized by the International Association of Universities (IAU) or UNESCO, ensuring that the educational qualifications meet international standards.
Experience:
The position requires a minimum of five years of relevant experience in either the public or private sectors, specifically in areas related to programming, planning, and technical cooperation in food and agriculture. Experience in project implementation within the scope of FAO's activities is essential, demonstrating the candidate's ability to manage and coordinate agricultural projects effectively.
Languages:
A working knowledge of English is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, particularly if they are relevant to the local context or FAO's operational needs in Tonga.
