Job Overview:
The National Climate Change Planning Specialist will play a crucial role in supporting the implementation of the Nauru Readiness Project. This position involves developing technical studies, enhancing stakeholder capacity, and ensuring alignment between project activities and national climate change planning processes. The specialist will be responsible for facilitating communication between government departments and supporting the National Designated Authority (NDA) throughout the project. The role requires a deep understanding of climate change issues and the ability to integrate these considerations into national and sectoral development plans, ensuring that Nauru's climate policies are robust and effective.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties of the National Climate Change Planning Specialist include collecting and organizing analyses on private sector engagement in climate action, supporting the preparation and updating of national climate change policies, facilitating the integration of climate considerations into development plans, providing technical inputs for climate initiatives, and synthesizing literature related to climate change. The specialist will also support capacity development workshops, monitor project developments, coordinate with the NDA Secretariat, and assist in drafting concept notes and terms of reference for project activities. Additionally, the role involves organizing stakeholder meetings and consultations to gather input for Nauru's climate studies and project development.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a university degree in climate change planning, International Development, Environmental Science, Social Sciences, or a related field. A minimum of three years of relevant experience in climate policy development and adaptation planning is required. Candidates must also be nationals of Nauru and have a working knowledge of English. FAO core competencies such as results focus, teamwork, communication, and building effective relationships are essential, along with technical skills in climate change adaptation and mitigation, policy planning, and strong analytical abilities.
Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a university degree from a recognized institution in fields related to climate change planning, adaptation, or environmental sciences. The degree must be accredited and recognized in the World Higher Education Database (WHED).
Experience:
The position requires a minimum of three years of relevant experience in climate policy development, adaptation planning, and development planning. Experience working with government institutions and development partners is highly valued, as is familiarity with the climate change situation in Nauru and the Pacific region.
Languages:
A working knowledge of English is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages relevant to the Pacific region may be considered an asset, enhancing communication with diverse stakeholders.
