Job Overview: The Head of Programme will be responsible for leading, managing, and supervising the Biodiversity and Society (BDS) Programme and the UNU-IAS Operating Unit Ishikawa/Kanazawa (UNU-IAS OUIK). This role requires establishing and developing academic programs and projects that deliver policy-relevant research, contributing to international discussions on biodiversity frameworks, and promoting sustainable management practices. The Programme Head will also oversee knowledge sharing and outreach activities, manage collaborations with strategic partners, and lead fundraising efforts to secure resources for the Institute's research and capacity-building initiatives. The position demands a strong commitment to advancing the Institute's strategic goals and fostering an inclusive and diverse work environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Establish, develop, and lead the academic programme and associated projects of the BDS and OUIK, focusing on policy-relevant research delivery.
Contribute to international discussions and frameworks related to biodiversity, including the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
Lead the International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (IPSI) as its director, promoting sustainable management practices and enhancing policy advice for localizing the SDGs.
Manage knowledge sharing and outreach activities, ensuring effective communication of research outcomes to various stakeholders.
Support the Director of UNU-IAS in institutional development and strategic planning.
Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor, contributing to the overall mission of UNU.
Required Qualifications:
A Master’s degree in environmental science, nature conservation, landscape management, biodiversity, community development, or sustainable development. A bachelor's degree with extensive work experience may be considered.
At least ten years of progressively responsible experience, with a minimum of five years in a managerial role, demonstrating leadership and management capabilities.
A proven track record in research and policy related to biodiversity and nature conservation, with extensive knowledge of international conventions and treaties.
Established networks within Japan and internationally, with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a multicultural environment.
Excellent writing skills, with experience in drafting and editing research and policy reports.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in a relevant field such as environmental science, nature conservation, or sustainable development. A bachelor's degree combined with extensive work experience may also be acceptable, highlighting the importance of practical experience alongside formal education.
Experience: The position requires at least ten years of progressively responsible experience in relevant fields, with a minimum of five years in a managerial capacity. Candidates should have a strong background in research and policy related to biodiversity and nature conservation, along with demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders.
Languages: Fluency in English and Japanese is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of another UN official working language is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage in international discussions and collaborations.
Additional Notes: The successful candidate will be employed under a Personnel Service Agreement (PSA) contract, with an initial duration of one year and the possibility of renewal based on performance and organizational needs. The position is part-time, equivalent to 60%, and offers an attractive compensation package, including an annual net salary ranging from JPY 804,790 to JPY 850,177, depending on experience and qualifications.
