Job Overview: The Nurse will work under the immediate supervision of the Head of Unit/Senior Human Resources Officer at ICTP and in collaboration with the Chief of Medical Service at UNESCO Headquarters. The primary function of this position is to provide first-line medical and health care support to approximately 160 ICTP staff members, along with 200-250 consultants, research fellows, and visitors, as well as around 40 staff from the Academy of Sciences for Developing World (TWAS). The Nurse will be responsible for assessing medical needs, providing first aid, offering advice on disease management, and ensuring the health and well-being of all individuals present at the ICTP Miramare Campus. This role also involves organizing medical examinations, liaising with health authorities, and conducting health promotion initiatives, thereby playing a vital role in maintaining a healthy work environment.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Nurse's essential responsibilities include providing first aid care to all visitors and staff at the ICTP Miramare Campus, assessing their medical needs, and offering advice on specific medical situations or preventive care. The Nurse will direct individuals to the ICTP Medical Consultant or other physicians when necessary, follow up on hospitalized patients, and provide guidance on medication administration and self-care. Emotional support for patients and their families is also a critical aspect of this role. The Nurse will organize entry medical examinations for new staff, arrange periodic medical examinations for at-risk categories, and assist with routine health initiatives such as disease awareness and vaccination campaigns. Additionally, the Nurse will maintain a list of medical specialists and health care facilities, inform clients, and arrange appointments as needed. Confidentiality regarding medical issues will be paramount, and the Nurse will liaise with local health authorities on mandatory reporting of infectious diseases while maintaining appropriate confidentiality.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a secondary, technical, or vocational school education as a nurse, with registration with the Nursing Council (O.P.I) and a valid nursing license to practice. A minimum of five years of relevant working experience as a Nurse is required. Candidates should also have a BLSD qualification and demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, discretion, and the ability to manage sensitive medical issues with empathy and care. The ability to work independently under pressure and manage emergencies is essential, along with a high level of reliability and a service-minded attitude. Proficiency in MS Office applications is also required.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes completion of secondary, technical, or vocational school as a nurse, along with registration with the Nursing Council and a valid nursing license. Additional desirable qualifications include training in HIV/AIDS management, which would enhance the candidate's ability to address specific health issues relevant to the population served by ICTP.
Experience: Candidates should have at least five years of relevant working experience as a Nurse, which should include experience in providing first aid, managing medical emergencies, and working in a health care environment. Experience in an international setting and familiarity with trauma and emergency care would be advantageous, as these skills are critical in a diverse and dynamic workplace like ICTP.
Languages: Excellent spoken and written knowledge of English is mandatory, along with a good working knowledge of Italian. Additional Notes: This position is a part-time role with a fixed-term contract lasting for two years, which is renewable based on performance and organizational needs.
