Job Overview:

  • It is important to note that this internship is unpaid and requires a full-time commitment of 40 hours per week. Interns will work under the supervision of professional staff and will be involved in various activities related to the Global Firearms Programme. The role will involve supporting the preparation of technical assistance workshops, conducting research on firearms issues, and contributing to the development of technical documents and reports. Interns will also engage in media reviews and assist in drafting correspondence and communications, thereby gaining valuable experience in international relations and organizational operations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will undertake a variety of duties, including but not limited to: supporting the Global Firearms Programme's activities, assisting in the preparation of workshops and meetings, conducting research on legal documents and firearms issues, contributing to the preparation of technical documents and reports, conducting legal research and analysis, supporting the GFP Community of Practitioners against Firearms Trafficking, performing media reviews on firearms-related incidents, drafting correspondence, and attending meetings to take notes. Interns may also be required to perform other tasks as necessary to support the office's objectives.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in or have recently completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), or be enrolled in or have recently completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). Additionally, applicants should be computer literate in standard software applications and demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations, along with a commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. The ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds is also essential.

Educational Background:
A field of study closely related to the internship is required. Applicants should have a strong academic background, preferably in areas such as international relations, law, political science, or a related field. The internship is open to those who are currently enrolled in a graduate program or have recently completed their studies, ensuring that candidates possess the necessary theoretical knowledge to contribute effectively to the UNODC's mission.

Experience:
While professional work experience is not a requirement for this internship, applicants should have relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the position. This could include internships, volunteer work, or academic projects that demonstrate a commitment to the field of international relations or criminal justice.

Languages:
Fluency in both spoken and written English and French is required, as these are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of an additional official UN language, such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an advantage and may enhance the candidate's application.
