Job Overview: The Associate Crime Prevention Officer will provide support in backstopping, coordinating, and monitoring the implementation of CITES Secretariat strategies, policies, and program activities in assigned countries or regions. This role involves liaising with national and international counterparts, fostering collaboration with stakeholders, and contributing to the development and evaluation of technical cooperation programs. The officer will also assist in recruitment processes, provide administrative support for meetings and workshops, and participate in technical field missions. The position requires a strong understanding of wildlife law enforcement and the ability to analyze data to support decision-making processes.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties of the Associate Crime Prevention Officer include:
Coordinating and implementing enforcement programs and activities of the CITES Secretariat, including liaising with wildlife enforcement networks and national agencies.
Contributing to the development and evaluation of technical cooperation programs and monitoring budget expenditures.
Assisting in recruitment processes by coordinating interviews and evaluating candidates.
Providing administrative support for meetings, including preparing documents and handling logistics.
Participating in outreach activities and organizing workshops and training courses.
Conducting technical field missions and preparing mission reports.
Analyzing data and identifying trends to support program planning and reporting.
Collaborating with other Secretariat units and performing additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess knowledge of wildlife law enforcement theories and concepts, as well as skills in research, analysis, and problem-solving. The ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with colleagues is essential. Candidates should demonstrate professionalism, efficiency, and a commitment to gender perspectives in their work.
Educational Background: An advanced degree (master's degree or equivalent) in criminal law, criminology, law enforcement, environmental law, wildlife law, or a related area is required. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. Completion of programs in data analytics or business analytics is desirable.
Experience: A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in national law enforcement, particularly in customs or police, is required. Candidates should have experience in international law enforcement and cooperation with intergovernmental organizations. Experience working with programs aimed at combating wildlife crime and familiarity with CITES or similar organizations is desirable. Experience in data analytics is also a plus.
Languages: English is required for this position, with a minimum proficiency level of UN Level II in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. French or Spanish is desirable, with a minimum proficiency level of UN Level I in these languages.
Additional Notes: The appointment is for an initial period of one year and may be subject to extension based on the continued existence of the mandate and availability of funding. The position is classified as fixed-term and may involve periodic reassignment to different functions within the United Nations.
