Job Overview:
As a Mechanical Technician at CERN, you will play a crucial role in the upgrade project of the electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) of the CMS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This position encompasses a wide range of activities and responsibilities, including mechanical works, handling and assembly of detector parts, and logistic activities. You will work closely with ECAL collaborators and the CMS technical team, ensuring that all mechanical support for ECAL activities is provided effectively. Your role will involve ensuring the safe handling of delicate ECAL detector Supermodules during extraction, insertion, and refurbishment, as well as coordinating logistics for materials and equipment necessary for refurbishment activities. Additionally, you will serve as the technical contact between the CMS experiment site and the ECAL refurbishment team, providing essential technical support for maintenance activities related to cooling systems, mechatronic equipment, and instrumentation setups.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Mechanical Technician include:
  • Providing mechanical support for all ECAL activities, ensuring that all tasks are completed efficiently and safely.
  • Ensuring the safe handling of fragile ECAL detector Supermodules during extraction, insertion, and refurbishment processes.
  • Coordinating logistics for materials and equipment required for ECAL refurbishment activities, ensuring timely availability and proper management.
  • Acting as the technical contact person between the CMS experiment site and the ECAL refurbishment team, facilitating effective communication and collaboration.
  • Providing technical support for maintenance activities related to detectors, including cooling systems, mechatronic equipment, and instrumentation setups.
  • Reading and interpreting 2D/3D designs and manufacturing mechanical parts accordingly.
  • Engaging in the design, construction, and assembly of mechanical components, ensuring adherence to specifications and quality standards.
  • Conducting detector assembly, including cooling systems, pressure tests, and leak detection.
  • Handling large and fragile equipment with care and precision. 1

Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for the Mechanical Technician position include:
  • A Higher Technical Diploma or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Mechanics, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of cooling operation and maintenance, with experience in logistic coordination being highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in reading 2D/3D designs and manufacturing mechanical parts accordingly.
  • Experience in the design, construction, and assembly of mechanical components.
  • Familiarity with detector assembly processes, including cooling systems, pressure tests, and leak detection.
  • Experience in handling large and fragile equipment safely and effectively.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, demonstrating strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures applicable to the work environment.

Educational Background:
Candidates for the Mechanical Technician position should possess a Higher Technical Diploma or an equivalent qualification in Mechanics, Mechatronics, or a related field. This educational background is essential to ensure that the candidate has the necessary technical knowledge and skills to perform the duties associated with the position effectively.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have relevant experience in mechanical engineering, particularly in areas such as reading and interpreting 2D/3D designs, manufacturing mechanical parts, and working with large and fragile equipment. Experience in logistic coordination and maintenance of cooling systems is also beneficial. Candidates with experience in producing 2D and 3D drawings, as well as those familiar with cutting, polishing, and assembly of optical materials, will have an advantage. Additionally, experience in cabling and soldering, along with knowledge of safety regulations, will be considered valuable.

Languages:
The mandatory language for this position is English, both spoken and written. Candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to learning French, as it will be beneficial for communication within the organization and with local stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
This position is offered as a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the position is fully onsite. Candidates should be prepared for work in radiation areas, interventions in underground installations, and may be required to work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays based on the organization's needs. Shift work may also be necessary. The selected candidate must obtain medical clearance due to the occupational health risks associated with the position.
