Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research institution established in 195
It is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics, employing over 2,500 staff members and hosting thousands of scientists from around the world. CERN operates in multiple countries, primarily in Europe, and is dedicated to advancing our understanding of the fundamental structure of the universe through innovative research and collaboration.
Job Overview: The Computing Engineer position at CERN focuses on enhancing and evolving critical software frameworks such as Geant4 and ROOT, which are essential for particle physics simulation and data analysis. The role requires a strong emphasis on optimizing software for modern high-performance computing systems, particularly through GPU acceleration and large-scale parallel processing. The engineer will contribute to the development of next-generation technologies, including AdePT for GPU-based particle transport, and will play a vital role in supporting future research initiatives like the High-Luminosity LHC and the Future Circular Collider. This position is situated at the intersection of high-performance computing, C++ software engineering, and experimental physics, making it crucial for advancing CERN's research capabilities.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Computing Engineer will be responsible for defining and executing the performance strategy for Geant4 and ROOT, with a focus on GPU architectures such as CUDA and SYCL. Key responsibilities include hands-on development and refactoring of critical software components, identifying and eliminating performance bottlenecks using state-of-the-art profiling tools, and participating in the organization of data simulation and analysis activities within the EP-SFT group. The engineer will also engage with user communities, foster collaboration within CERN and with external partners, supervise team members, and coordinate activities related to data simulation and processing projects.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Physics, or a related field, or have equivalent relevant experience. They should have demonstrated experience in high-performance computing, particularly with GPU programming and C++. A proven track record in optimizing large scientific or data-intensive software projects is essential, along with solid experience in using performance profiling and debugging tools. Familiarity with Geant4, ROOT, or similar frameworks is advantageous, as is experience in compiler-level optimization work and knowledge of Monte Carlo particle transport algorithms.
Educational Background: The ideal candidate should have a Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Physics, or a closely related field. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complex scientific principles and advanced computational techniques required for the role.
Experience: Candidates should have substantial experience in high-performance computing environments, particularly with GPU programming and C++. They should also have a proven history of optimizing large-scale scientific software projects, ideally with experience in performance profiling and debugging tools. Familiarity with high-energy physics simulation frameworks and contributions to compiler optimization projects would be beneficial.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, and candidates should be committed to learning French. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset but is not required.
Additional Notes: This position is a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract. The job requires a commitment to work 40 hours per week, with flexibility for hybrid working arrangements. The role may involve working during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed. CERN offers a competitive, tax-free salary that increases with relevant experience, along with 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance, and a relocation package depending on individual circumstances.
