Job Overview:
The Media and intern" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Communications Intern position is designed for candidates who are eager to gain practical experience in international communications, media outreach, and public information within a dynamic United Nations environment. The internship is full-time and unpaid, requiring interns to work five days a week for a duration of two to six months. Interns will be supervised by a staff member in the Trade Policy and Facilitation Section, where they will support various communications-related activities linked to policy events, publications, and social media outreach. This role is particularly suited for junior-level candidates with a background in communications, media, journalism, international affairs, public policy, economics, law, design, or digital media. Interns will have the opportunity to contribute to the visibility and outreach efforts of the trade team, gaining first-hand experience in how UN publications and policy events are developed and communicated to external audiences.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern's duties and responsibilities will encompass a wide range of tasks aimed at enhancing the visibility and outreach of the Trade Policy and Facilitation Section. These include:
  • Supporting the preparation and organization of meetings, workshops, policy dialogues, and regional events, including assisting with event promotion and communication materials.
  • Developing visually appealing outreach materials such as flyers, brochures, event banners, and concept note visuals.
  • Assisting in the design and formatting of publications, reports, briefs, and presentation materials to improve readability and visual consistency.
  • Capturing professional photos and short video content during selected events, highlighting speakers, participants, and event highlights.
  • Contributing to the production of short videos or visual summaries to communicate the section’s work to wider audiences.
  • Supporting the section’s media and outreach strategy by identifying effective communication methods for policymakers and the public.
  • Reviewing and improving website content to enhance user-friendliness and visual engagement.
  • Assisting with drafting public information materials, news items, event summaries, and press releases in coordination with ESCAP’s communications teams.
  • Organizing communication assets, event materials, and publication files to support knowledge management and visibility efforts. 1
  • Performing other related tasks as required by the team, providing a comprehensive learning experience in international communications and public information work.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates are encouraged to apply if they possess skills or interests in one or more of the following areas: communications, media, journalism, public relations, digital outreach, graphic design, publication layout, photography, video editing, visual storytelling, event communications, social media content creation, or website content management. Familiarity with tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, video-editing software, and website content management systems is advantageous. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent) or (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). No prior work experience is required, but relevant training, education, or skills should benefit the United Nations during the internship.

Educational Background:
To qualify for the internship, applicants must be currently enrolled in or have completed a graduate program or the final year of an undergraduate program. This means that candidates should have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent. The educational background should ideally be in fields related to communications, media, international affairs, public policy, economics, law, or digital media, which aligns with the responsibilities of the internship.

Experience:
No prior work experience is required for this internship position. However, candidates should demonstrate relevant training, education, or skills that would contribute to the work of the United Nations during their internship. This could include coursework, projects, or volunteer experiences that relate to communications, media, or international development.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language, such as French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an asset. The working languages of the United Nations Secretariat are English and French, and proficiency in these languages will enhance the intern's ability to communicate effectively within the organization.

Additional Notes:
The internship is conducted in person in Bangkok, with a possibility of a hybrid arrangement that combines in-person and online work. Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations, and all costs related to travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns or their sponsoring institutions. Candidates who are not citizens or permanent residents of Thailand may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization.
