The successful candidate will engage in a multidisciplinary project team, focusing on mechanical engineering and design for high-energy physics projects, particularly in the area of Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) equipment. This role requires a strong passion for mechanics and proficiency in computer-aided design, as the engineer will be responsible for creating detailed 3D models and technical drawings, conducting structural and thermomechanical studies, and ensuring compliance with design and drafting standards. The position also entails technical management of design office activities, collaboration with various stakeholders, and preparation of project documentation, including technical reports and specifications.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Mechanical Technical Engineer include:
  • Technical management of design office activities in collaboration with other services within the EN-MME group and with experts and stakeholders across CERN, particularly for accelerating cavities within the FCC project.
  • Analysis of design requirements based on functional specifications or other relevant information.
  • Execution of design studies for mechanical assemblies, components, tooling, equipment integration, and layout.
  • Creation of detailed 3D models and technical drawings, including specifications, detail, manufacturing, assembly, installation, as-built, and verification drawings, in consultation with CERN manufacturing and materials experts.
  • Preparation of project documentation according to Design Office quality assurance procedures.
  • Preparation of presentations, technical reports, engineering specifications, and calculation notes.
  • Participation in contract negotiations and preparation of technical specifications.
  • Follow-up on the manufacturing, assembling, and installation of mechanical components in close interaction with other teams and services.
  • Provide technical oversight and guidance to a team of designers and draftsmen to ensure quality, consistency, and compliance with requirements. 1
  • Ensure follow-up of assigned activities using internal administrative tools, including preparation of estimates, maintenance of job descriptions, and processing of amendments to support timely and accurate invoicing.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires a Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Candidates must have proven experience as a designer in a mechanical design office, performing mechanical dimensioning and utilizing standard mechanical analysis tools, both analytical and numerical. Familiarity with computer-aided design is essential, along with experience in producing technical drawings of mechanical components and systems, ideally according to ISO Geometrical Product Specifications (GPS) standards. Experience with the CATIA computer-aided-design software suite is considered an asset. Candidates should possess technical competencies in the design and construction of machines, analysis of mechanical structures, production of 2D drawings and 3D models, assembly of mechanical structures and equipment, and configuration and use of information management systems.

Educational Background:
Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field. This educational background should provide a solid foundation in mechanical principles, design methodologies, and engineering practices relevant to the role.

Experience:
Candidates should have proven experience in a mechanical design office, demonstrating a strong ability to perform mechanical dimensioning and utilize standard mechanical analysis tools. Experience in producing technical drawings and familiarity with ISO Geometrical Product Specifications (GPS) standards is essential. Additionally, experience with computer-aided design software, particularly CATIA, is highly desirable.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, with a commitment to learn French being an important asset for effective communication within the organization and with stakeholders.
