Job Overview:
The Associate Director of Development and Outreach at Human Rights Watch will play a crucial role in managing fundraising and outreach efforts in New York City. This position is integral to the Development and Outreach Department and is expected to work from the NYC office at least two days a week. The Associate Director will report directly to the New York Development Director and will be responsible for implementing the fundraising strategy, managing donor relationships, and overseeing the engagement strategy of the committee. The role also involves project management of teamwork flow, leading events such as the annual Voices for Justice celebration, and managing team members. The Associate Director will collaborate closely with the New York Associate to ensure successful fundraising and outreach initiatives, making this position vital for the organization's financial support and community engagement.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with the New York Development Director to develop and implement the fundraising strategy.
  • Represent Human Rights Watch to current and prospective supporters, effectively communicating the organization's mission and needs.
  • Manage a portfolio of donors, soliciting major and leadership gifts as well as general support funds to maintain and develop financial support.
  • Work with the team to identify, cultivate, and solicit new prospects and existing donors, including New York Committee members.
  • Oversee and lead fundraising, outreach, and cultivation events in New York City, including the annual Voices for Justice celebration and other private events.
  • Manage communications and initiatives related to the Committee and donor engagement, ensuring alignment with advocacy and fundraising projects.
  • Develop and implement a strategic plan for the Committee in collaboration with its leadership.
  • Supervise the New York Associate and coordinate with event consultants to ensure successful event execution.
  • Oversee gift processing and donor support services in Salesforce, including mailings, gift tracking, and acknowledgments. 1
  • Manage donor lists, fundraising reports, budgets, and office/event expenses. 1
  • Facilitate regular team meetings and prospect research to enhance fundraising efforts. 1
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required to support the organization's mission.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience. A minimum of seven years of experience in fundraising, event planning, and management is required. The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to build relationships with a diverse range of donors, committee members, and board members. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are essential, along with strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration within HRW and with external partners. The ability to multi-task, plan, and organize effectively under pressure is crucial. A demonstrated commitment to human rights and international issues, along with the capacity to represent HRW's mission and programs, is highly desirable. Proficiency in computer skills, particularly with donor databases like Salesforce, and familiarity with social media platforms are also important. An entrepreneurial spirit and the ability to work independently while being a team player are highly valued.

Educational Background:
A bachelor’s degree is required for this position, although equivalent work experience may be considered. The educational background should ideally be in a field related to fundraising, nonprofit management, or a similar area that supports the functions of the role.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of seven years of relevant experience in fundraising, event planning, and management. This experience should demonstrate a successful track record in managing donor relationships and executing fundraising strategies effectively.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, with excellent oral and written communication skills required. Additional language skills may be considered an asset but are not specified as mandatory for this position.

This is a full-time position based in New York City, with an expectation to work from the office at least two days per week. The salary range for this role is between US $102,000 and $112,000, and HRW offers competitive compensation along with employer-paid benefits.
